Please please please consider getting a rescue dog instead of paying a ridiculous amount of money for a Schmoodle, doodle or pugawoodle fashion accessory. There are thousands of dogs in rescue centres in Australia most of whom have just been abandoned through no fault of their own and most rescue places will try and match you to the right dog based on your preferences and 'allergies'.

Try looking at www.petrescue.com.au or www.pedigreeadoptiondrive.com.au before you buy from a breeder or off a private ad - they have lots of choice and some pups and young dogs available also. You will be giving a home to a dog that might otherwise end up in kennels forever or worse.

We chose a Spoodle as my son is asthmatic and my brother has a spoodle and he is fine with it and we know what we would be getting, he got his from a Pet Shop but I would rather go to a breeder if possible.

I don't want it for a designer dog reason just a health reason. I don't like poodles (had an agressive poodle down our street when I was a kid and has put me off them)

We have looked at the option of a dog pound but I would hate to bring home a puppy from a pound that my son turned out to have a reaction to and it would then have to be returned, breaking my children's hearts.

So a spoodle it is, have looked on the internet for breeders but most seem to be in Victoria etc. Thanks for the help will keep on looking.....

I know you've set your heart on a spoodle, but have you looked at Maltese shih tzu's? They have the same non-shedding hypoallergenic fur that the poodle has. Have a quick google for them and you'll see they are great with kids! Also, they are much easier to get hold of!

I'm sure you've done your research but these designer cross breeds don't always bring out the best (wanted) traits in the breed - and sometimes won't show up until pup is older ... as in I've read a lot about spoodles being bought for non-shedding qualities and then they've shed!

I've three dogs here and I have always bought direct from family based breeders ... I think pet shops are places to get goldfish from, or dog bowls!

As other posters have put dogzonline is good - most are registered breeders and these people work hard to get their breeds right.

I would've rung probably a hundred different people before securing the right dog - some people get very odd on the phone when you ask questions but I reckon I've the right to ask as much as is feasible - this dog is going to be with me and my family for a long, long time!

Good luck - oh I meant to say there's lots of Pet Carriers available so if you decide to go with a breeder from out of state it's not the end of the world but it will add to your costs of course!

Most breeders will mail a puppy to you! They put a little stamp on it's head and pop it in the post... We did laugh when we first saw this!

However, I would suggest that you meet your new furry friend first as even from a young age you can gauge it's personality.

We had 6 kitties to choose from: 2 identical girls - so we had one of them but with the boys one chewed, two looked a bit weak and the final one was very affectionate and climbed up on OH's shoulder and went to sleep - so he chose us!

Just out of interest last night I looked at the pet rescue site and 70% of the dogs on there were Staffy's or Staffy crosses, the others were Rotties, Greyhounds and I found one dog on there who appealed to me but apparently he had "issues"! Surely if most of the rescue dogs available are Staffy's shouldn't that be the questioned why there are more of them than the Oodle dogs as I've yet to see any on there - this is just an observation!!!! I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who love your Staffys!

By the way Renth...our friends have a Gt Dane - he's a lovely boy but there is just soooooooo much of him now as he's just about reached his full height but such a cute pup!

It just comes down to the dollar. Staffordshire Bull Terriers have had their day in the fashion stakes now and are not seen as desireable. So, they don't fetch good money and the shallow people that bought them as fashion accessories have decided to move on (probably to an oodle type thing).

We have a labradoodle,she is so intelligent and like someone said no hairs to worry about,vacuuming is the last thing i want to do every day...lol..but each to thier own,all i can say everyone who knows my dog cant believe how obedient she is,she's almost human well she does has shes told more than the other half anyway...

I work in a groomers and we had a cavpoodle in the other day? I should presume that they are the same as spanielpoodle and cavalierpoodle from the same breed of a sorts.

It was very knotted and they fur can be quite coarse!!! (brush every day especially behind ears, makes our lives so much easier) I can probably find out where she came from if you want?

I've been on the lookout for a labradoodle for a friend who recently lost her standard poodle and is at the point of searching for another. Havent seen too many though - as Koalakim said, most of our rescue dogs available are greyhounds or staffies. Sadly a lady I used to work with was with Poodle rescue but had to give up for personal reasons and now it appears no one is specifically rescuing poodles or any of their crosses.

Were recommended to them by lots of people. Not cheap though but supposed to be very good.

I think when you buy you need to take your son along to be sure he's not allergic. The trouble with buying a cross is you won't know if your pup is the same "mix" as the other dog. Bit less poodle and perhaps your son't health will suffer.

I also think you should consider a maltese etc - if the find the long hair too high maintenance just get him clipped regularly.

Spoodles are beautiful!! Good choice.
