Default Spider identification...

Anyone able to identify this spider? The match head is for size comparison... it's a large match, by the way!

Found in a pot on our balcony, near North Beach, WA.

Cheers

It's not a spider is it? I can only count 6 legs - I think it's an ant/termite of some kind. And anything that small can't really do you any damage anyway - go get a glass of wine and chill out

You can die as a result of a bite from some mosquitos and ticks (although not sure if this is true for Australia).

Could be a very young redback. They start off translucent but I've not really seen one that pale but with the red stripe. Has it got darker joints on the legs?

See top right on this link:- http://www.usq.edu.au/spider/find/spiders/307.htm

The big issue with spider bites is how you react to them. Funnel web bites are very nasty, but you won't see them over in WA - well not yet anyway.

If it is a redback you won't necessarily have a problem with a bite. If you haven't had any violent reaction - excessive swelling, pain or any strange neurological symptoms like blurred vision or numbness, then your body will deal with it in time. My daughter got a nasty bite on her leg shortly after we arrived in WA and we went to the local pharmacy. The pharmacist told us that if she had no adverse reaction (which he defined as above) after two hours then not to worry about it. We weren't 100% sure it was a spider bite, but even so, nothing untoward happened.

Keep an eye on it, but don't expect trouble. Whitetails are of more concern, imo, because they often leave bacteria in the bite which can cause infection.

The nastiest bite I've had since we've been here is from a March fly. Sucked a load of blood then left three horrible blisters which itched like mad....yuk....
