Default Specific volume limit for sole use container, put more in pay more?

Hi all,

Has anybody had a quote for a sole 20ft but you can put what you want in???

We thought all long that Groupage was as it is, shared and certain quantity but only realised this week when started getting the quotes in that they actually state too how much eg 700 cu ft in sole 20ft and if we put more in it will cost us more even though we have sole use?

Really shocked when we realised that

Thanks

Only 1 out of 6 agents haven't stated specific C U FT in sole quote and need to clarify the other FCL quote so may not be either.

Had sole use 40ft from Crown - once it was sole use, no limit on what we could put in it (other than what it could hold!)

The estimate ended up lighter than the actual load - we ended up putting in a few things we initially were going to leave - and no extra charge

Hi Tramway,

700 cubic foot is about the size of a ten foot container, if you have sole use of a 20 footer, you should have about 1,300 cubic feet.

You need to seek clarification from your shipping company.

the extra costs will be for the extra packaging and labour costs involved. think on average its about 40p a square foot. so its easy to work out if its worth putting more stuff in.

We had the same thing and it was because it would be extra packing and handling etc for the addition space. They quoted us a price for a sole use container but we only 660 cu ft of goods to take. When I asked about it they said we could take more but it would cost more.

I also queried why the sole container price (with a cubic feet limit) was almost the same price as a shared container and the guy said it was because there was still the same amount of handling, loading/ offloading etc of the container despite it being shared. Didn't quite get that personally as the container cost should have been shared so don't think I will use the company who quoted that price.

Are you packing and loading yourselves or is the moving company doing it for you? If they've estimated you have 700 cu ft they will have based the cost on the amount of time it takes a crew to pack the boxes, wrap the furniture and load it into the container plus the freight costs to ship it (the only cost that wont change if you go over your 700cuft) and then to unload and unpack at the other end. If you send more, the packing etc. takes longer, so they will charge you for the extra time.

With groupage it's the same (i.e. you pay the packing costs for how much you have) but then you get to split the cost of the container, so if you have 700 cuft you'll likely pay 2/3 of the container costs, so if you take more you'll pay a higher proportion of the freight charges as well as higher packing charges.

hope that helps!
