If anyone's interested I've found the lyrics to Matilda no more:

Once jolly swagmen went humpin' their swag
And stuffed jolly jumbucks in their tucker bags
These days jolly junkies go on bag snatchin' jags
And steal to buy the poison they need
The old swaggie just wanted a feed

And who'll come a waltzin' Matilda with me?
Oh Banjo this country's not what it used to be
We've changed all your words and re-written your score
Now it's waltzin' Matilda no more

Once Henry and Mary, on a warm afternoon
Rode down Reedy River to the broad bright lagoon
The song of the river is a long banished tune
Since they built the uranium mine
What's left now is just toxic slime

And who'll come a waltzin' Matilda with me?
Oh Henry this country's not what it used to be
It's passed with a whimper and not with a roar
And it's waltzin' Matilda no more

We cut down the trees and the land we reclaimed
We ploughed and we planted, then we ploughed once again
And again and again and again and again
So now on a hot windy day
We can watch our top soil blown away

And who'll come a waltzin' Matilda with me?
The desert is marching right down to the sea
On the day that it stretches from shore to far shore
We'll go waltzin' Matilda no more

Saturday night outside a Kings Cross hotel
Kids with hard drugs and soft bodies to sell
Australia, these children are halfway to hell
Oh is this the best deal you can give
I find that hard to believe

And who'll come a waltzin' Matilda with me?
Hey Anzac, is this what you fought to keep free?
A land fit for heroes now homeless and poor
And it's waltzin' Matilda no more

And who'll come a waltzin' Matilda with me?
This country could still be what we want it to be
With care and compassion the dream will restore
And we'll go waltzin' Matilda once more

We'll go waltzin' Matilda once more

**************************

Another song that always gets to me, old softie that I am is "The band played Waltzing Matilda" Although I'm sure it's played to death over there around Anzac day.

Of course, it's been recorded many times so if I had to choose a version I'd go for the one done by the Pogues.

Our song is by Enrique Inglesias called "Escape". We're not fans of his but this song just has something about it, everytime we hear it we think of Oz.

Sad I know!!!

Hi, hows about Jimmy Cliff - I can see clearly now!!

I can see clearly now the rain has gone
I can see all obsticles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that made me crash
It's going to be a bright bright sunshiny day
Look all around there's nothing but blue skies
Look straight ahead nothing but blue skies.

Ella Fitzgerald - Its too Darn Hot

No, really at the moment I would say Delta Goodrem (Nina from Neighbours) - Born to Try

Doing everything that I believe in
Going by the rules that I've been taught
More understanding of what's around me
And protected from the walls of love

All that you see is me
And all I truly believe

That I was born to try
I've learned to love
Be understanding
And believe in life
But you've got to make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've got to sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

No point in talking what you should have been
And regretting the things that went on
Life's full of mistakes, destinies and fate
Remove the clouds look at the bigger picture

And all that you see is me
And all I truly believe

That I was born to try
I've learned to love
Be understanding
And believe in life
But you've got to make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've got to sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

All that you see is me
All I truly believe
All that you see is me
And all I truly believe

That I was born to try

I've learned to love
Be understanding
And believe in life
But you've got to make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've got to sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

Now you have
But you've got to make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've got to sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

It has to be Waltzing Matilda, I often sing it with the kids in the car!!

And that old one from the 80's that went..

Do you come from a land down under,
( forgot the words)...
I met a fair lady she made me nervous,
She took me in and gave me breakfast.

The bit about vegemite is funny as well.

Who sang that stupid song was it men at work??

Very sad choices i`m afraid but here goes,

`Otis Redding, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay`

` Supergrass, Alright`

` Waterloo, Abba`

There are mine other half may not agree.

The Manics for sure!
Also "walzing matilda" by the pogues
also for some strange reason James "sit down".. .."those who find themselves touched by madness, sit down next to me"
I think its the ASPC thing again!
also "I will survive" as sung/ mimed (?) by transvestites in "pricilla queen of the desert"

See you mentioned the `Priscilla` thing again, you know i like that film anyway reading other postings i remembered this little ditty from `Crocodile Dundee`

How can you see looking through those tears
Don`t you know your worth your weight in gold
I can`t believe you`re alone here
Let me warm your hands against the cold

Hey Yeah you with the sad face
Come up to my place and live it up
Hey yeah you beside the dance floor
Whattya cry for let`s live it up

A close encounter with a hardhearted man
Who never gave half of what he got
Has made you wish you`d never been born
Thats a shame cause you got the lot

If you smiled the walls would fall down
On all the people in this pickup joint
Hey lonely girl thats just the point

Just answer me the question why
You stand alone by the phone in the corner and cry

How can you see looking through those tears
Don`t you know your worth your weight in gold
I can`t believe you`re alone in here
Let me warm your hands against the cold

If you smiled the walls would fall down
On all the people in this pickup joint
And if you laughed you`d level this town
Hey lonely girl thats just the point

Hey yeah you with the sad face
Come up to my place and live it up
Hey yeah you beside the dance floor
Whattya cry for lets live it up

Lets live it up
Live it up
Live it up
Hey yeah you
With the sad face
Come up to my plcae

Written and sung by `Mental as Anything` from Australia

If i think of anymore cheesy numbers i`ll let you know

There's a female Australian artist called Christine Anu from the Torres Strait Islands - bit poppy/souly/ballady and she has a great first album with loads of songs that make me nostalgic for Oz (I've been a few times) but there is one in particular called My Island Home - at the time it was in the Aussie charts in '95/'96 it was dubbed the alternative Aussie national anthem... does it for me, anyway...
