I didn't know they weren't legal in WA.

Yes, as mentioned, the gambling prob in Aus is rife. Annual state budgets depend on a certain level of income from pokies (like they do speed cameras) and govts are reluctant to take measures that may reduce this income.

They don't sound too popular whatever they are.
First time I went to Oz, a good friend told me that pokies were 'ladies of easy virtue' who hung around the bars touting for business. Only problem was - I believed him!

Sometime later, working in Sydney and still ignorant of the truth (they're 'one-armed bandits' - gaming machines, in fact), I was amazed at the frankness of some colleagues who said they were off the spend lunchtime 'with the pokies'
