It doesn't even need to be automated - you wait for a 'hot' day say at least 25 degrees - the pergola roof will get hotter than that through radiant heat - wait until the afternoon and then start the pump and open the loop.
He's got a temp gauge and the like but I won't bother with that - I just need to know when the water is hot on the roof. And on the right days, and there will be a fair few - it won't be long.
