How much does Solar pool heating cost to install and run and is a better alternative to the pool rings or blankets?

We have been quoted $2500 for the heating (we have the pipes in already)

Sounds like it could be a fair wack to fork out at first if you already have the pipes and we need to get those as well.

Mmmm... if pool would just self heat wouldn't need any of this... :D .

Thats about what we paid.

Running costs. Well it's a smaller pump then the pool pump, but it's on from just after the sun come up till the sun goes down, or the pool get to the correct temp.

We paid an additional $2500 on top of the pool price to have solar heating installed. System works well and we have been comfortably using it since it was finished 2 weeks or so ago , but our pool isnt that big so wouldnt be too hard to heat (7.5 x 3.5 metres).

We paid $3,100 but it's the best 3 grand we've spent allowing us to use the pool for a couple of extra months. The running costs are not that great, our electric bill didn't go up that much but for a few extra dollars each week its well worth it.

I've got a cheap electric pump off ePay. Not even 1hp. Going to install black PVC piping on the pergola and do it myself.

Ours cost just over $4000 extra when we put the pool in, but ours is a big pool.

The best diy pool heater we saw was in chillagoe when the man had a beer barrel running on top of a fire pit with water pumped in and out of it to heat the pool.

Did catch myself having a fantasy where I wondered what would happen if you tied lots of empty two litre coke bottles together and put them bottoms up in the pool. Would they work like giant bubble rap and heat the pool one wonders?

Problem then is you wouldn't be able to swim in it for coke bottles.

The Queen is putting in some sort of underground bore thing to heat her palace somewhere not sure how it works.

The Buckingham Palace Bore Hole
Meanwhile, in other Royal residences, smaller, but no less significant efforts are being made to save energy and conserve the living environment.

The Royal Household has helped address the local environmental issue of rising water levels in London with the creation of a bore hole, dug in 2002 underneath the Broadwalk in the garden of Buckingham Palace. London is at risk of severe flooding unless water levels under the Capital are properly controlled.

Local environmentalists believe that new buildings can put the rising water levels to good use, for example in air conditioning systems.

This is exactly what is currently being done at Buckingham Palace with the bore hole being used to supply air conditioning to The Queen's Gallery.

Cool water is pumped up from the bore hole, this water then cools a series of plates, similar to the elements on the back of a refrigerator, which in turn is used to cool the air in The Queen's Gallery.

Once this water has been used for cooling, it is recycled by topping up the water levels in the lake in the Buckingham Palace gardens

I need to run the details through my mate whose idea I've nicked. I believe he circulates it on the roof, or holds it there before it circulates through to the pool loop. It doesn't even need to be automated - you wait for a 'hot' day say at least 25 degrees - the pergola roof will get hotter than that through radiant heat - wait until the afternoon and then start the pump and open the loop.

He's got a temp gauge and the like but I won't bother with that - I just need to know when the water is hot on the roof. And on the right days, and there will be a fair few - it won't be long.
