There's well over 100 species of snakes in Aus and the vast majority are venomous, even the rear-fanged colubrids (such as the supposedly harmless Brown Tree Snake and Slaty Grey Snake) can deliver a nasty bite.
However, only a relatively small number are considered dangerous or deadly. These include:
Eastern Brown,
Western Brown,
Dugite,
Ingram's Brown,
Peninsula Brown,
Ringed Brown,
King Brown,
Red-bellied Black,
Blue-bellied or Spotted Black,
King Brown,
Death Adder,
Desert Death Adder,
Northern Death Adder,
Pilbara Death Adder,
Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan,
Coastal Taipan,
Tiger Snake,
Collett's Snake,
Broad Headed Snake,
Pale-Headed Snake,
Highland Copperhead,
Lowland Copperhead,
Pygmy Copperhead,
Rough-Scaled Snake,
Small-eyed Snake,
Northern Small-eyed Snake,
All 20+ species of Sea Snakes,
All Sea Kraits.
Actually, that's rather a long list and isn't even complete!

I think snakes a pretty much everywhere, possibly not in the middle of cities like Melbourne and Sydney but everywhere else, and you would just be unlucky (or lucky depending on your point of view) if you came across one.
I know we get them around here, a friend of mine who lives on a 1acre block not far away gets a fair few, but they will generally leave you alone, just be careful if you're walking through long grass in case you step on one!
Must admit I forget that we have so many dangerous snakes here, you just get used to it I guess. I know adders were a big problem in our neck of the woods in the UK.
