Snakes
How likely is it that you’ll encounter a snake, irrespective of whether it’s poisonous or not. (Bet I’m not the first to ask!)
|
Re: Snakes
Very likely over time. Especially if your not living in a city center.
But it's nothing to worry about, It the spiders that U really need to watch out for !  |
Re: Snakes
Hi
We've been here for 7 months now. We live fairly near the bush in Sydney's Northern Beaches. Haven't seen a snake yet, just a few big spiders. Fortunately the spiders haven't ventured in doors yet. Mhairi |
Re: Snakes
One or two in a year, maybe, if you're really lucky.
If you live in a high bush area, maybe three or four... but that's if it's very dry and they're out looking for water. Snakes are naturally shy and won't bother you if you don't bother them. Same with much of the wildlife here actually. |
Re: Snakes
Lived here for almost 3 years and only ever seen an ex-snake!
However, we do live in mass suburbia so that has something to do with it! |
Re: Snakes
Unlikely. I've been here two and a half years and I've seen only one. That said, I do keep my eyes open when walking in and around the bush.
In terms of worrying about it it's not really an issue. Maybe 4 or 5 people a year are killed by snakes, out of a population of about 20 million people. Most bites occur when people try to pick them up. Big. |

Re: Snakes
We've had two Eastern Browns around our little six-villa development in the last month - that we know of, that is.

Re: Snakes
:D
Yes, I'm sure snakes come through our garden regularly, but we don't actually see or meet them... |

I love snakes and I go out looking for them. Nevertheless, unless I know with absolutely certainty it's a harmless species I wouldn't go anywhere near it. There are a lot of dangerous species and some, such as Tiger snakes, Taipans, Western and Eastern Browns, Dugites and many of the Whip snakes are not averse to moving into your garden and very exceptionally, your house! If you are concerned about snakes, don't panic! Most people never have close encounters and many don't see any at all, even after years of being in the country. Personally I am way more concerned about crossing the roads here considering how some drivers behave!! |
Re: Snakes
Something that we'd never thought to be worried about was Ants! That is until we went camping this weekend. The kids managed to stand on top of a Bull Ant nest and got badly bitten by the not so little blighters. They reall are nasty little sods, had to hit one about eight times with a shoe to stop it in its tracks even then it was still attempting to get at us.
For those of you still in the UK these things are about 5x the size of ants there. You can see them if you click here |
Re: Snakes
if you have found evidence that snakes do use your gardens, how can i prevent my dog from getting bitten, is there anything that can be used to prevent snakes from entering your garden?
|
Re: Snakes
My uncle Billy
had a ten foot willy and he showed it to the lady next door. She thought it was a snake so hit it with a rake and now it's only two foot four. |

Re: Snakes
Given that snakes eat frogs, I'd say that having frogs in your garden was an open invite for them to come eat any time they wanted to.
Why on earth would your children kill frogs in the first place? <completely bemused> |

We have frogs and toads but haven't seen a snake - so far. I thought snakes ate them though  so that would increase the risk ? |

I've seen quite a few now, both rural and suburban. We also have lots of frogs in our garden and, as you can see, a nice friendly snake came to visit for a few days.

Re: Snakes
It's totally dependent on where you live.
I'm in Sydney, near the beach, and I'm prepared to swear that there are no snakes within a 25 mile radius of where I am (discounting the ones in the snake house at Taronga). I've lived here for over 25 years and in all that time I've only ever seen two snakes - and both of them were seen miles away out in the bush. |
Re: Snakes
True, snakes do like to munch on frogs. I found our resident green tree frog being attacked by a tree-snake, luckily the frog lives inside a hollow pool-fence post (it fills up with water - clever froggy). So the snake didnt get it.
The snake had legged-it (so to speak) before I got back with my camera. Our suburb is in the dunes behind the beach at sunshine coast, we definately have red bellied blacks, browns, tree snakes and of course carpet pythons. Having said that I was a gardener here for 2 years, got called several times to clear undergrowth because of snakes (one of which was red-bellied black taken, alive, through a catflap by a cat), but even so, only seen a handful of snakes over all that time. p.s. Red Bellied Black number 4 on all time deadliest. |

I think your thinking of cane toads, they reckon if you have them then you wont have snakes...that said if your cat brings them into your garden like mine did....(cheers tonyk38:D ) weve been here 18mths and have seen 4 snakes(alive) and a croc or two locally!:D still love it and dont really give it much thought anymore. You just educate the kids not to pick up things in the bushes and not to be playing in the garden at dusk(if the snakes dont get you, the mozzies and sandflies will:o ) have fun Trish |

Re: Snakes
I heard it was the red belly blacks that are still stupid enough to eat the cane toads (then die) so, if you have the toad, your less likely to see the rb black.
We have toads & snakes (no real dangerous ones though) mainly tree snakes & whip snakes (which the cat caught) we have also had them in the house a couple of times! oh yes, and we live in suburbia ..... snake count so far 10 (3 years) |

For those of you still in the UK these things are about 5x the size of ants there. You can see them if you click here Ants are a real flippin' nuisance where we live. As well as regular trails into the house by "standard" ants we have a large population of Inch Ants (yup 1 inch long!) or Bull Ants as some know them. We've also had a snake (Brownie) in the house that tried to strike Mrs Tyke:eek:  We do live on the rural edge of the city though. |
Re: Snakes
Just returned from our reccie trip to oz and didn't see any snakes. The day i got back to England and took our dog out i was within an inch of being bitten by an Adder. Instead of it beating a retreat it kept trying to attack me, god knows how the dog didn't get it. I know several people who have had expensive pet bills due to Adder bites. So i'm more worried here!!
