If Paddyo's suggestion doesnt work, I would delete AVG and install Avast in a situation like this, and vice versa if Avast played up.

Download Avast.... turn off modem, uninstall AVG, install Avast, turn modem back on.

Concur with Avast.

Use AVG removal tool to get rid of it http://www.avg.com/ww-en/download-tools.

It's fixed. It was just a simple case of changing the exceptions in AVG firewall. Strange that it should suddenly stop Skype from working though? I don't know anything about computers, so with all of your help I was able to resolve the problem. Well done Ex Pats.

Having done 6 yrs on an ISP helldesk, I used to get the same question about Skype or email suddenly not working 2-3 times a day.
It was usually the firewall, turn it off and turn it back on usually fixed it, nortons was the main offender.
