Hi Adamant,
It really does depend what you`re looking for and realistically what sort of money you have to spend.
Devon, Cornwall and The Isle of Wight are all lovely places to visit, living there is another thing, as a retired couple it maybe your cup-of-tea. Can you elaborate a bit more on what type of life you`re looking for and without stating exactly how much you have, a rough idea would be of some help. Do you know anyone over here?
Good Luck
Marlo

We are not British Expats but I'm hoping you will not mind giving some advice to 2 Aussies sick of living in Sydney about nice places to live in England for a few years perhaps for good.
The drought last summer was the last straw for us. We went to Tasmania in January to get away from the heat and dust and only returned a couple of weeks ago. On arriving in Sydney and travelling back home through the same old grubby streets, I thought "not back to this again". While the summer weather is over, its more than that. We have seen most parts of Australia and travelled a lot elsewhere. But we feel Australia has become too small for us, too much the same all over.
We are retired with enough money (I think) to be able to afford a nice house in England not too expensive. We like to travel but need our comforts.
Your suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

Much depends on what you want from living in UK,
A good place to look is
covers England, wales, Scotland etc. Although it gives a biased view towards tourists, if you see a place you like the look of you can research some more on the net, or post here and someone is bound to live near by.

Another option is a home exchange for a long stay try some of these sites may help , you could get lucky and find some one who wants a long holiday.

Thanks, was not expecting so many good, useful replies.
Well, now to spiral back to a bit of reality:

renth: Lots of nice places in WA but been there etc.
pommie bastard: I'd caravan / motor home happily, trouble & strife needs lots of porcelaine about and at least 2 walls for the books; might trim that a bit!
pomijean: We have been to the SW so know of what you speak and it is definitely on our list.
Ceri: Good sense says we should rent as you suggest.
GengaKev: Wife fancies being a bit of a Local Heroine but maybe a summer one!
dotty: Driving around between a few reasonably well selected locations, visit real estate agents is eminant good sense.
kevmitch: Pretty sure we do not want to live in big cities, some where central to south would still allow exploration of the NW.
footie chick: You are right, God will have to wait a while, we hope.
Wanderlust: We have acquired contrarian habits, only venture out when all is quiet.
Stoney: The winter does worry us a bit but maybe we can join the swallows in Africa.
Marlo: No immediate family in Aus or UK. Think we are looking for something reasonably simple in "the bush" but nearish to good facilities and with good porcelain!
plumber39: Thanks but I think the house and garden would be a bit much for us.
karawara88: we are a bit of old bods, like "finding" stuff by "accident", some of the tourist stuff not for us.
pommie bastard: House Swapping is a very sensible suggestion but would anyone in the UK want to come to Sydney for the winter while we have their house in UK summer?
All in all, I think renting for 6 months during the UK summer makes most sense. The question is where and how much we should budget.
Perhaps you can think of some place that you would like to retire to given a reasonably modest pension income? Somewhere a little out of the way but not remote, suitable for 2 and where a good rental would be reasonably easy to find.

Do not forget that most Poms think Australia has no Winter you should be on a winner.
PS a lot of retired people in the UK do this too.

Two suggestions ... try the remote corners of the UK like Cornwall or the Welsh coast, or try some historic places like Chester, York or Edinburgh. Consider the South Lakes.
Also visit Dublin (in Ireland) and the Isle of Man.
