Default Shipping the pets

Ok, i've tried several agencies, and they charge a small fortune to ship the pet (a small dog in this case). Has anyone shipped out to Oz independently and how easy is it

There's about 3 threads on shipping pets on the first 2 pages... take a look.

Most of us have found that airlines prefer shipping agents to deal with the process and you will find it hard to book your pet onto a flight without an agent.

I have had a quote for £1250 for a small dog plus quarantine and blood tests.

Hi Lianne

Try shipping 3 large dogs - thats a large fortune! But having looked into it we have decided it is still better to use an agent - the hassle of getting all the timing correct with the cargo agents, sealing the crates, vet inspection at the airport etc etc is just not worth it.

We still haven't made up our minds but got quotes from Golden Arrow, Airpets, Ryslip Kennels, Overhill Kennels, Ladyhaye plus a few others I can't remember the names of. Very difficult getting accurate quotes for setters as they are not that easy to measure so we are taking them over to Ladyhaye for them to measure them.

Hope this helps

Hi all - when we go in a few years we have 3 dogs that we are taking with us - one of them is a rescue dog and is very timid with strangers and can snap at people if she is really stressed - what would any of you suggest - will they let us be there when they crate her up - will they allow her to go in a crate with one of the others - this is really worrying us as the other 2 are great and will go to anyone.
Thanks for any advice.

She def wont beable to go in with another dog... You might beable to be there when they crate up... But if it were me, I would just let them get on with it. Remember it will be even more stressful for you and the dog will pick up on it. If you don't know it can't worry you... just make sure they are aware of her situation. Thats what I would do anyway. I have no intention of being anywhere near when I drop my dog off - he will be taken to the kennels and I will say my goodbyes.

Sam, if you don't have a crate then buy one early and get her used to it, just treat it as a spare bed and leave the door open for her to get used to. The shipping companies are good, they normally have the dogs for a few days before to get them settled and used to the crates as well but if you know she is nervous then earlier the better for her

It cost us £3300 including all quarantine fees and an extra flight for our border collie from Sydney to Brisbane. Full door to door service.

I agree with other posters that its best to let the shippers take your dog away and deal with everything as seeing them put in the crates etc would probably worry you more.

We opted to visit our dog half way through her quarantine. Some say visit and some say dont.

The biggest change to our lives as dog owners is that dogs are only allowed off their leads in designated off leash areas. Some of the off leash areas are quite small and you have to drive to a decent size area for a good run for the dog.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - i think as hard as its going to be i think you are right to buy a box and get her used to it and then let the shippers sort her out.
At least we would be able to visit her when she arrives so thats not to bad - thanks again.
Love Sam.

Just to continue on from this chat. can you visit your dog as many times as you want when they are in quarantine or is it restricted?
Thanks
