Shark!!!
There seem to be a lot of shark attack reports around at the moment.
Do you think that the frequency of sightings or attacks seems to be increasing, or are the media just making more of them than they normally would do? Has anyone re-considered any beach activities because of the reports? Would love to know what you think?.... Simon |

Re: Shark!!!
Yes... Australia has sharks. Act accordingly.
Report ends. |

Simon With good reason plentiful supply of food in the water at them moment, a lot of fish about. Thats why I don't go in the water. Re: Shark!!!
Now, my theory is that it is dolphins! Evil dolphins. One of the reports said there were dolphins swimming around, and then the 'shark', which noone saw, bit the bloke. Obviously a dolphin! They try and convince you they are all cute, then they strike!

Dolphins would not attack humans in the way a shark would, they would bash you with their tail and show signs of agression before they would attack (very rare) where a shark will stalk and strike with speed and surprise. See my pics below of Dolphins near Hawks @ Nest Port Stephens. |

Yeah Dolphins are smart very animals they will attack a shark by ramming into it and bursting the sharks swimbladder, an so killing it. or so I have read somewhere.

What surprises me is that sharks as a whole haven't figured out how much easy meat there is to eat off the coast of Australia. I suppose anything that's been around for 200 million years takes a bit of time to adapt to a new food source, but it will happen eventually. |

Are watching they don't take too much high cholestrol, high alcohol content, homosapiens. Okay for a snack or taken in moderation:D |

Re: Shark!!!
PUtting it all into perspective... in 2007 1 HUMAN was killed by a shark... whilst 100,000,000 SHARKS were killed by humans in the same year.
Add to that the amount of HUMANS killed by other humans, by drink drivers etc... I"m not too worried about the sharks. |
Re: Shark!!!
No, it's them rouge dolphins you want to worry about.:rofl:

Re: Shark!!!
There's been quite a few sightings round here over last week or so and one of the attacks was just down the coast from me yesterday. Still going surfing later though! Not sure if I'm naive, fearless, stupid or just plain bonkers!
|
Re: Shark!!!
Ooo ponyrama we are in the same area as you - 12 hammerheads south south beach and 6 bull sharks spotted at windang yesterday.
I know there is regularly a school of hammerheads between fairy meadow and north beach just outside the nets - a spearfishing friend told me lol |

Re: Shark!!!
Shark attacks are sufficiently rare to make each one newsworthy so I don't think there is an increase in reporting as such. There have certainly been a few incidents recently, but then there are probably a lot more people in the water this time of year, not necessarily more sharks.

Re: Shark!!!
I thought this number was high so googled and came up with this:
http://www.greendiary.com/entry/100-...servationists/ Interstingly, UN says 10 million a year but "some environmentalists" say 100million, which lead the articlle's author to suggest the UN is lying and covering up, as opposed to "some environmentalists" lying for some other reasons.

100 million sharks? Are you sure about this? Surely that's aquatic genocide?

Here's a great pic taken there on Sunday while the kids were in surf school. Estimated 3 metre white pointer. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574...7-1242,00.html A buddy of mine who surfs most days pointed out that at any given time they reckon there is a shark never farther than 200m away from you. Keeps you humble :-) |

Re: Shark!!!
If that was the UK, there would be a public enquiry.......3m great white is a juvenile so no sweat....
Chimes with another story I saw about 16 juveniles observed of North Oz coast...over couple of hours! Think they are mainly fish eaters at that size. Gonna have to go see them to desensitize: would prefer my first encounter to be with a cage wrapped round me!! Pies |
Re: Shark!!!
There are thousands of Bullsharks in the Brisbane river and all round the SEQ coast.
They have always been there and they are dangerous. Seems like the media are having a field day with this one G |

Re: Shark!!!
For a spectacular experience you can go diving in a grey nurse shark breeding ground off Nelsons Bay. Absolutely amazing. BTW they are harmless. In Sydney there are heaps of Wobbygongs which you can see snorkling.
