Default Setting up as a sole trader

My wife has just got a job for a private individual on a casual basis and wants to make sure everything is legit. I presume she needs to set up as a sole trader, get a TFN and and ABN. I am scouting around the ATO website but would appreciate any info from someone with experience of doing this.

ATO Apply for an ABN

This also allows TFN application.

Hi!

Has she considered working through a management company? They sort out all your tax etc for her and they take say 2% of her income. That's what I'm gonna do. Saves the hassle of all that paperwork.

I'm classed as a contractor and am effectively employed by a management company, but work through an agency who have placed me at a major plc. I reckon your wife could do the same.

Ask at work - maybe someone has a company and would like another "employee".

If you are self employed, an ABN number is needed, otherwise any payments you get may be reduced by 48.5% tax deduction at source.

This management company thing sounds interesting, at 2% a time, maybe I'll set one up and you can all work through me

Hi,

For those interested in this management company, send me a PM and I'll pass on the details. Haven't actually received their ins and outs in the post, so don't want to get your hopes up until I see it all in writing. Should be with me tomorrow hopefully. Sent by fastpost apparently...
