Hmm, a close family member was a baggage handler at Heathrow. They used to hate dealing with bikes because there's so many checks. The explanation I got was a bit Father Jack-ish, but I got that the main problem is something to do with the air pressure in the tyres - they need to be flat, which, from previous posts, would probably explain why they get unpacked to check that they are okay to fly. Also further to previous posts, I think Seven Seas might have had a bike option too.
