Default School age

Hi all

Does anyone know what age children leave school in Oz? I think its 17 If so, what would my daughter do? She is 16 in August 08 and is in her final year at school and will do her GCSEs this year (she is the youngest in her year).

I suppose there is no point in her doing a year in oz if she has done her GCSEs in the UK and then start 6th form in Jan 09...am I correct?

Can anyone help me?

Cheers

Where are you going in Aus? Here in Victoria they stay on to the equivalent of A'Levels with the VCE or VCAL (more a trade type of course) for the final 2 years. She would probably go into year 10 when she arrived which is not as stressful as GCSEs etc but it would put her in the right age range for her final 2 years. Personally I would have a chat to local schools before you head out.

Hi Nicky

Thanks for your reply.

She is in year 11 at the moment...we are hoping to go to Adelaide.

Year 11 is year 10 here roughly (on age anyway). She would need to go into year 11 if she wanted to start the final 2 years of study (I forget what SA calls it) which is the same as going into 6th form in the UK. The schools will be a great help and you can always give them a call for a chat and more info.

My step daughter will be 16 at the end of Dec. When she goes back to school next year she'll be in year 11.

Thank you to you both for you advice....the hard part is convincing her to come with us. I just need to know what her options are so I can plan and make it as simple for her a possible. Good idea to contact the schools.

Many thanks....Debs x

Some schools will send you school newsletters and she might even be able to make contact with some of the other kids before she goes. She could perhaps do some research on something in the UK to help with a project or something or the other way around and get chatting on MSN to them. It can be pretty daunting but if you are confident and open with her then it will be easier for her to deal with.
