Only a few managers in our Australian IT organization make more than $60k, but I've got plenty of people in the UK on more than 40k ukp. 1000ukp = 1200 Aus$ would seem like more realistic estimate. But this is only my experience in my company and your mileage may vary...

As you say, it varies wildly, but for me 1000ukp = 2300Aus$. So there seems to be a range of 1Ukp to 1.2 ->2.3 Aus$ depending on the skills you have and the job you land.

Yeah - it is all relative. There are always people on money that others can't believe. There are plenty earning a lot less.

You cannot convert. Simple as that.

Examples:
Most managers would be earning 70-100 in Melly probably. Managers in Tech seem to earn 60-70k. Developers 50-100k dependent on age and seniority.
Even a senior secretary can earn 50,000 in Sydney. 35k -50k would be someone in an admin or support job with varying degrees of experience.

In my experience, professionals in Australia are not as in desperate straights as is often portrayed; but tradies are! The reverse of what people think. The very highest salaries in London beat Sydney and Melly hands down but not everyone is on that highest bracket, maybe it's 20pc limited to verticals like banking; London is a world banking centre.

I am a nurse/ midwife and in UK with 9 years experience I earned around 9 pounds a hour basic thats for a 3 year diploma and 18 month degree course too! in oz got paid about $24. an hour, this worked out about the same. Considering all the lower costs of living, this went much further in oz!

Almost bang on mate, an Environmental Health officer in London can expect to earn around 33K and in Australia around $50K. If you compare salary v ave house price plus food bill and running a car the actual cost of living is not that different in relative terms.

I agree Mercador, my husband is in I.T and based on his skill set and having friends in exactly the same jobs over there, we are lookng at 20-25% less, which is fine by us.

He pays £600 a month just on transport into London, I would imagine his bus fare into the CBD will be no more than $10 a day or $200 a month, for us the sums seem to work.

I think there a major difference depends on type of job. i.e

a job where you earn whatever you can negotiate is very difficult to compare; rather than a fixed payscale job.

eg..I am a part qual accountant. Here I earn £15 ph = £29K per annum. My next job here could quite easily pay £12 ph= £24K per annum.

In Sydney...from looking at lots of adverts....
I am expecting between $45-55K (£20k to £25k)

So from these figures...you can see that in my field in Sydney...I can expect 20% less.

HOWEVER..and its a BIG however...and to contradict what I have just written..

these figures are TOTALLY irrelevent...as these are taking fX into account. One should take fX into account ONLY when changing money etc

One should always look at DISPOSBLE income.

Look at you take home in each city...then deduct bills/cost of living.

THEN see what you are left with.

Even then, you can't compare these 2 figures. You should look at what you would be using this disposable income for. i.e saving for kids uni fees in the future. look at bank interest rates etc.

You could even forecast what you should have saved by the time you retire.

To sum up...Its all about what standard of living you want in life.

Always....FORECAST....to get the real picture.

Personally...i could never live mortgage free in a detached house with pool in London.

However, in Sydney...I am 10 years max away from realising this dream!

There not, we have just brought a brand new Honda CRV and it cost the equivalent of GBP 14,000, we spend $100 per week on food which as a percentage of our wages is about the same the same with housing. We paid 25% of our income on a UK mortgage and will again here. I am not making a comparison of the price of things in Oz rather than the UK rather the cost of things relative to our wages here and in the UK and they are roughly about the same.

I know what I mean

Wages in the construction Industry in Perth are up 13% this year. The highest of all the Industries.
I earn more here and no longer have a mortgage, so for my family and I Australia works. (plus the weather is nicer )

Cost of living is much the same, but eating out is cheaper.
A large Dominoes pizza is only $5 for example.

Wages in IT are less than the UK though I believe.

This thread is perfect timing for me as I am researching salary level for in Australia!!!

I am leaving for Sydney on Feb 4th. When I quit work I told them I want to work in Sydney office for 5 years, employed under local terms and conditions, then option to stay in Sydney office or return to London office. If I asked them for a transfer they would have said no way. They have in principle said yes, however I have to agree local terms and conditions with Sydney office.

I am researching what my salary should be. Take a look at:
a) http://www.robertwalters.com/salarysurvey/Default.jsp You can compare your job description salary level in UK to Melbourne/
b) Michael Page has salary survey for 05 http://www.michaelpage.co.uk/control...ectionid=10124
c) http://www.hays.com.au/ also has Aus salary survey

My HR dept in UK told me this is just indication only, but some good baseline. I should also send CV to head hunter and ask them for some idea of what to expect as sometimes you get premium for specialist skill.

I expect my salary to be lower than in London. Sydney is an expensive city, but not as expensive as London. I am happy to take a cut in salary for a better quality of life.

Hi Buzzby

I'm currently in recruitment in the Uk, moving to BrisVegas in Jan. My salary is £30k in the Uk, however, it is not commission based. However, my rec2rec agency in Brissie has told me with my 4 years experience, I should expect to earn a basic of AUS$65k with a first year OTE around AUS$85k.

Now that works out at a rate of £10'000 earned in the UK should translate into AUS$22'000.

Realistically, you should be getting more in Melbourne??

Make sure you hold out for a good offer, Recruitment seems to be very much in demand. I have 4 interviews arranged for when I arrive in Brisbane without even trying!

Hope this helps

Ben

And If your rec agency told you that they could get you a job offering $40k...would u register with them?

I spent years believing rec agencies. Now I treat them with real scepticism.
