I think that most of the high taxes go to run inefficient government services. Or rather governments, how many bureaucracies do I have to support with my taxes? Part of the high tax thing is necessary as the population is dense but far apart, infrastructure costs are therefore high for roads, electricity lines whatever. Also, quite reasonably taxes need to go to support servics to the small pockets of far flung communities. HOWEVER, that aside I think most of the high taxation is due to inefficient government, bureacracy and the lack of commercial drivers upon the state and government owned businesses, including the provision of Medicare. its true that streets are clean and trains are on time but this doesn't take up a huge proportion of the government purse.
