Default Renting/Buying when you arrive - what's required?

We are flying out in a couple of weeks, heading for Geelong.

Rental

To rent a property, what is required? We will have ID (passports) and a reference from our current (and only) landlord.

Deposits are not a problem.

I have heard proof of income may be required. Obviously we would not have anything Aussie, just our UK payslips. How do you get round this?

Buying

This might be a silly question but is it possible to get a mortgage when you arrive without first getting a job? We would have a reasonable deposit to put down.

Any other comments gratefully accepted.

Our idea to buy when we first arrived was to use some of the money for a deposit & store the remaining balance with the bank for payments to the mortgage for say the first 6-8 months. Unfortunately due to flat not selling we don't have that option so didn't bother to follow it up, so not sure if it was ever a valid option Unless you definitely know what area you want to stay in then I would say rent first & have a good look around. All the best

With a deposit of 40%+ you should have no problems, less than that you will need too contact a broker, less than 20% and you will find it difficult if not impossible.

But essentially you need to rent first to work out what works and what doesn't - or you might find yourselves buying in the wrong area.

Thanks for the comments. We should have 40+% as a deposit if we are sensible.

We are heading for Highton and so far from all the research we have done, we have not found out anything negative about it.

Can you shed any light on Highton Geelong Gent?

Its about 90km from me.

Perhaps by posting a specific thread on Highton might attract the attention of members who live within that area of Geelong.

Have not heard anything wrong with the area - it would seem quite central.

Thanks. We have done a lot of research already but just thought with your forum name you might be in Geelong.
