Relocating with pets

Hi
I have a Weimeraner and have had quotes between £2700 and £3800..plus the cost from Sydney to Cairns and the quarantine charges!!..and all the vets bills.
They price it by the crate size that is needed for the dog..our dog is large unfortunately!

budget all in around £2500 per animal - BUT it will go up the bigger the animal for shipping costs. We shipped Charlie the Shih Tzu in November, used Airpets at £1350 then add $800 for quarantine charges - micro chipping costs, any costs for anything that needs doing before the animal is shipped to get it in top health (VETS fees etc), blood tests are awesomely expensive but they'll be tested for lepto and other things. Remember to add rabies (if you will be taking the animal back to the UK at all - not necessary if you do NOT return the animal to the UK). Plus there are always the extras you didn't think of at the time such as getting the animal to the shipper plus possible overnight costs for that.

Hi
It makes me so sad to read this thread. This is what i am really dreading, when we finally find out about our visa, we applied in August- so are in along back log. We then have to look into rehoming 2 golden retrievers it isn't fair to look at shipping them the youngest 1 who is 2 can't get in the car without sounding as though he is about to have a heart attack and hates to be seperated from the other 1 for minutes let alone a long flight i don't think it would be fair to put them through this and wouldn't be of any benefit to them.
This said it is going to break our hearts and we will have to find them a home together which just due to the size of them is no easy task.

Hello,
We are hoping to move to Perth later this year and will be sending our beloved Westie (Elle, 9) over too.
I am worried sick as she has never been in kennels, let alone a crate. Can anyone answer if she can travel with her bed or toy and should/can we send her ahead of us so we can pick her up on arrival a month later, or would you advise shipping at the same time?
Also, can you visit them and walk them or not?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Mick & Bev

We are sending our chocolate lab out 3 weeks before we fly so that we only have a week and a half until we can pick him up the other end. We figure this way we can sort ourselves out when we arrive and find somewhere to rent then when he arrives we can just concerntrate on him. It's completely your choice when they fly. We used Jets4Pets and they've been really good, they book the quarantine, got us a contact for flying him from Melbourne to adelaide too. I do know that in the crate they have just water and they recommend you take them for a long walk on the day they fly and definatly don't feed them (because they'll be stuck in the crate for over 24 hours). As someone else mentioned on here and as i posted on the original post, we will put an item of clothing that we have both been wearing that day so it has our scent on it and should help him feel comforted if he's scared!
I hope this has helped, you just have to think -they send thousands of animals every week so they'll be fine.

Hi,
Just got email back from the Perth Quarantine place.
Kitty's spot is booked for end of April. Took 5 days to arrange via email.
To note - We contacted all three quarantine stations, and they all had the same reply about the waiting list - there is none for cats, only for dogs, so if you plan to take a cat, don't get put off by the notice about 5 months plus waiting lists.
Still waiting to hear from AirPets - The person we deal with is on holiday this week.

You pictures really helped, as it is the first real indication of what the kennels actually look like. She is going to love the watch tower

Just got word today that my three have got their import licences approved. I've authorised the pet mover to book their flights for 30 April, assuming they can be booked into Eastern Creek from 1 May.
We're in Sydney at the moment, trying to find somewhere to live, and almost ALL landlords are refusing to take cats. Found a house today that, although in a lovely place, is not perfect, but we're thinking of applying for it mainly because the LL will allow cats. They'd love it, too.

Hello there,
I arrived in Sydney about 6 weeks ago now with 2 cats. Bascially, if they were not moving to Oz, I was not moving!
Firstly, they flew airpets. Fantastic. Can't recommend them enough. Also, we were very impressed with the staff at the Eastern Creek Quarantine station. Our carer was Jessica, and she was lovely. They even advised me when one of my cats put on 300 grams since arrival.
However, be aware of problems while renting - if you are renting. I was a nervous wreck and in tears for the first few days. I do not know what rental markets are like in other areas, but in Sydney it is manic. Flats are out, they are all managed by Stratas, who make up the governing rules, and they all appear to have a no pets rule. We called up loads of Estate agents when we saw houses we liked, loads said no pets. Eventually, we saw one house, and did not even ask the EA about the pet policy. We handed in the application there and then, with a lovely cover letter expaining how good our cats are. We mentioned how we had just had our UK home recarpeted (perfectly true - our Oz move came out of the blue). In the letter, we also offered to have the carpets professionally cleaned when we leave. We also offered 3 months rent up front and offered top dollar rental (be prepared to offer over and above the asking to help you secure). The place we are in was going at $700 per week, we offered $750. This worked, and we got the property.
So, if you are going to bring the pets:
- Do not mention pets to the EA as I do not trust that they even check if they would be accepted. Unless the ad on the internet says no pets, go and hand in your application and see what happens.
- Be prepared to offer over and above the asking rent.
- Have a good cover letter supporting your application.
Good luck!

Thanks, Helen - we're putting in an application this morning on a lovely little cottage in McMahons Point
(and when I say little, I mean miniscule
). We're also looking at some more private houses later.
We got our current LL's star of a property manager to email us a glowing reference that included a note about our cats being no trouble at all. The other day we viewed a fairly new penthouse that had been totally trashed by - allegedly - a toddler. Needs new carpets, paint throughout and water damage to floorboards fixing. My cats wouldn't do anything like that damage.

He yelled his head off when I visited him last week and left him when it was time to go.

Its harder on the owners than it is on the animals I reckon. Although what I found sad was at about 11.25am - five minutes before visiting time starts, all the dogs started howling at once and then barking.

Gordon was in his watch tower when I went to see him and I had to call him for him to come down.
I also stuck my head up against the glass to say hello to some other cats and there is a very nice old looking torti cat on the left hand side near the door entrance, I made a point of talking to her through the door as she was such a cutie.

I've heard its far worse on the owners, and can well believe it.
Not long before Gordon goes home now though

I'm panicking a bit about renting now... I've got 2 male cats & they are coming with me but the rental market for pet owners sounds difficult. I hope it will be ok. Having said that, the house I'm renting in UK at the moment said 'no pets' on the advert & I managed to persuade them...hope I can do the same in Oz! Is anyone else having problems finding a place?
