Hi Everyone

I had a meeting last night with a migration officer and no matter which way we chopped it up i'm still 5 points off a 175

So... my options are a regional visa or student.

i'm worried about the regional visa and was hoping someone could advise on the realities of the first few years being regionalised....

I'm was hoping to get into Western Australia but would also look at South.

my worries are...

1. Is there an available selection of work outside of Perth thats doesnt involve engineering or the building trade?

2. Do employers readily accept a regional visa given that its temporary?

3. Can anyone recommend some cities outside Perth to look at?

I'm probably over worrying - but would welcome the benefit of someone else's experiences.

we have friends in Northam which is only an hour out of Perth and 3 years ago they came out on a regional visa, and are loving it, I think that there username was Pootle 26 on here, Paul

Hi,

We used to live in Chittering, which is 100kms north of Perth on the Northern Highway so inland. We LOVED it. We were a little isolated, but the local community (all Ausies) adopted us and were wonderful with us. We went into the city every weekend and booked into a backpackers and had a ball.

It was the experience of a lifetime, and we are now heading back to Perth. My only regret is that this time we will have to live in the city, and will be heading to the 'country' for the weekends.

Other regional visas exist with different areas specified.

Other place regional WA, is Geraldton. However its 4 hours from Perth.
Seams to have plenty of expats here.

Its booming in Geraldton at the moment and lots of building work going on, new housing, marina,shops,touristy things etc. We are not slowing prob no slow down for a long time.

Also just got go ahead to build new port and rail,roads for the mine. This will keep people working for a long time.

So if your engineering/building work you could get plenty of work here. However big rural town and 4 hours North of Perth. But sunshine most of the year round.

Nice town, right on the coast with several beaches,shopping centres,sports centres etc. If you want any info on the place pm me.
You can also drive to Perth on weekends, we have even done a Perth and back in one day.

From a monetary angle, I would be more tempted by regional than student if money is an issue. Lots of people struggle with finding the money to survive although others have no problem. 20 hours work a week, studying for x years without knowing for sure if it's going to get you PR at the end would scare me senseless.
