Thanks for your help. Unfortunately husbands company are big on the loyalty thing and if they suspect you want to leave then they will make life very difficult for you. A bit depressed now because we don't feel that our dream is shot to pieces. We plan to move in 18 months (visas permitting) and we still have to survive financially so asking them for a reference will be too much of a risk. Really frustrating!

It says you have to provide a technical reference from your current employer but if I was to ask for this my employer would know that I am planning to leave the company which could be very awkward and risky in my trade (electrician). Is there any way around this? I can provide references from the last 4 companies I have worked for just not for my present employment.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Good news!!! We were at the Emigrate 2006 show in Glasgow yesterday and asked various people about the reference problem. As expected many people have the same problem with obtaining references from their current employer and the Australian government recognise this so instead you can do a Statutory Declaration detailing your experience in your current job and a description of it. Take along a contract of employment and payslips to a lawyer and get them to sign and verify your Statutory Declaration. Problem solved! Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation to ours.
