I'm sure everyone will have other suggestions and comments about these questions and the number of points attributed to each, but just for fun, here's a wee quiz to do from which you may be able to gauge how likely your emigration is to succeed.

Enjoy! (....takes cover.......)

The real emigration points test - how successful will your emigration be?

Start with 0 points.

Emigration attitude

Have you lived abroad before? – add 20 points
When you are abroad, do you respect and seek out local customs and culture – add 20 points
Do you respect Australians you have met? – add 10 points
Are you moving to Australia primarily to escape something/someone in the UK? – subtract 10 points
Do your experiences abroad resemble the TV program “Benidorm”? – subtract 20 points.
When you are abroad, do you impose your own culture and customs on the country you are visiting? – subtract 20 points

Money

Do you have an independent income or do you have a job/income organised? – add 15 points
Do you have more than one job interview lined up? – add 10 points
Do you have a skill demonstrably in demand? – add 5 points
Do you have no skills in demand, but have normally been in employment – subtract 10 points
Do you have no skills and no recent employment history – subtract 20 points

Housing

Will you be mortgage-free? – add 20 points
Can you afford the house you want? – add 10 points
Do you want to live where mainly British people live – subtract 10 points
Are you moving to Australia primarily to have a bigger new house? – subtract 20 points

Family

Do you have close family in Australia? – add 20 points
Is the average age of your kids under 5? – add 10 points
Is the average age of your kids 5 – 10 years old – add 10 points
Is the average age of your kids 11 – 18 years old – add 0 points
Do you have close family in the UK that you see more than once a month – subtract 20 points
Will you be leaving any children (eg from a previous marriage) behind in the UK? – subtract 20 points

Scoring

The maximum number of points you can get is plus 150.
The minimum is minus 150.

Plus 100 – plus 150 – You’re an Australian returning home aren’t you?
Plus 50 – plus 100 –What are you waiting for? Get on the plane!
Minus 50 to plus 50 - work on the areas where you scored low and try and mitigate them.
Minus 100 to minus 50 – Probably better to stay in the UK. The dream may not turn out to be a happy one.
Minus 150 – minus 100 – Benidorm calls…..

How did you do?

That's a very interesting questionnaire.

I did it twice, based on my two moves to Australia.

My first move, I scored in the Minus 50 to plus 50 - (work on the areas where you scored low and try and mitigate them) bracket, never worked on it and returned to the UK.

2nd Time around, and the score was 100, so I covered two positive brackets.

I've created a small spreadsheet for Excel 2007 for those who can't operate a calculator.

Save and rename the attachement with xlsx extension i.e. change txt to xlsx
Attached Files

Emigrate with Attitude.txt (13.8 KB, 127 views)

55 Points. Mature immigrants with older children a factor.

Interestingly our in-laws are calling in tomorrow - it will be their first time with us since Easter of last year. I have no family and all my wife's siblings live at least three hours away and it has been like that for the past 20 years. The missing family bit may still be an issue who knows but not a smuch for some.

What we missed when we last lived there were in no especial order clouds, the football scores on the radio at 5 on a saturday and cold weathewr...

Where's that plane?

Like it!

Like your thinking too - definitely agree that previous experience of living overseas helps!

We'd never been to Australia (apart from the interview) but it's just another country and defo better than Saudi

Um, by the time I'd read all the replies I'd forgotten what score I'd got.

Perhaps I need to go vote on TP's Are you a moron poll

I did get in the 'what are you waiting for, get on the plane' category though, so hurrah!
