Well I was taken aback when he made the statement, then I had a rethink.... He is from India and we aren't so maybe things are changing.
So MG what about the slums outside of ND.... are they still full of untouchables or not ? I expect that the huge [emerging] middle class of India would not like to see things in terms of castes. It's not something they would be happy with. |

No one will like to touch someone who is smelly and unhygenic :) Slums are slowly being replaced with cheap housing. The problem is rate of population increase is outpacing rate of development.

Ok try the question another way, can someone from a Wealthy Family end up in these slums, through alienination... or are you generally born into them ?

Most of the racism you will experience will be from other immigrants and their Australian born children.
Australians practically dont exist anymore, they are going extinct. You will probably be made monkey noises by a group of Asians and you will probably be threatened by a gang of Lebs. Aussies are the least of your worries. |

I haven't noticed Sydney being that racist (certainly no different to London) but I'm a white Pom.
Where I notice the "racism" is towards those that can't speak/write english well or can't join in a conversation about what is happening on the telly, big sports stuff etc. or those that refuse to go to the pub or are overly religious. |

I only know about three QLD Aussies, all the rest are from interstate or overseas. No one seems bothered by anyone else regardless of where they come from - unless they are complete dickheads of course. Only 'racism' I've heard personally is against Aborigines and that's only a few. Luck of the draw I guess.

I dont know if I would quite call it racism but in some places there is an undercurrent of dislike against anything not australian. Regardless of if your white or black you have to expect certain people to be against you if you are english or if you have any accent I think.
The majority of people are really nice but its just the odd one or two that can be a problem. I was really taken aback the first time I met someone who really had a hatred against english people, it was a bit of a shock At the end of the day you have to understand your in their country as a guest and accept that you will bump into some idiots who might be racist, or whats the term for hating english or anything different, nationalist? The old white Ocker thing still lingers in some places like out of the way towns and outer suburbs for example. One does at times get the feeling that political correctness impacts on what a number of folk really think. |

Interesting angle to the racism discussion. Seems like many aussies like Asians and third worlders but don't want Kiwis / Canadians (see comments section)
Keep the Canadians out |

Ok so is the main problem with Aussies against Indians is that Indians in particular do not socialise with anyone and cant speak English? Indians coming from India I honestly agree are like that in majority, the same with many Chinese people...
Is that the main dislike towards them? If a British Indian shows even the Aussie how to drink properly in the pub, he would be OK? Also I don't mind the odd comment because I can give it better then I get from people, but I just don't want to get beaten up by gangs! :o I plan to stay in Sydney. |

It has only been a relatively short time since black and Indian faces appeared in moderate numbers on the streets. |

Yes there is racism in OZ but l think its one of the least racist countries in the world. In malaysia arent the Chinese discriminated against l think theres laws where the muslims get preference for jobs and uni places. Imagine the international outrage if the OZ governemnt made a law where white Aussies get first preference for jobs and education in favour of non whites. But countries like malaysia get away with being as racist as they like and they then have the nerve to accuse oz of being racist
Especially if those minorities had the lions share of the business and out performed the longer inhabitants in the education stakes. Australia would i suggest be a very different country. |

The two worst places, were Goodawindi, and one suprisingly in NSW Port Macquarie.... I almost got in a fight with the PM one as my Son was with me and he was only 7 . It has never happened in Brisbane, or Sydney though. |
