Ok, the long and short of it is that we get a total allowance of 120kg for the 3 of us, we've weighed in tonight on the bathroom scales at 122kg and are thinking of a quick trip down to southampton airport to weigh in again to double check.

The question is.............is anybody aware of how lenient Singapore Airlines may be if you're 1-5 kgs over??

It depends on who you get at the check in counter - sometimes they are nice and sometimes they are not.

Check in early - if you are one of the first chances are they will let you by with the tiny extra.

2kgs between 3, i reckon you should be ok. But why not try and shove a t-shirt or 2 in a hand baggage case, that should do the trick!

Thank you for your email regarding migrant baggage allowance. The baggage allowance in Economy Class is 20kgs.

Passengers emigrating to Australia in Economy Class are entitled to double baggage allowance if holding the correct visa.

The visa must be an unused migrant visa that states to remain in Australia indefinitely. If you are holding this visa you will be entitled to 40kgs baggage allowance on showing the visa at check in.

You can have as many items of luggage as you wish providing 1 item alone does not exceed 32kgs for health and safety purposes.

If you are not holding the correct visa then we will only be able to waive 5kgs to bring the total baggage allowance to 25kgs. This again will be upon check in.

Its approximately GBP30.00 per per extra kg if taking excess baggage.

All passengers are entitled to 1 main piece of hand luggage at 7kgs. Hand luggage allowance can not be exceeded

Once you arrive at our checkin counters they will check the visa's at the back of your passport as long as they have not been used then the 40kilos will automatically apply.

One time we were over our allowance (about 9kg) and Singapore Airlines (at Perth Airport) didn't bat an eyelid! We were the first to check in which may have helped. If you're worried, why don't you wear the extra 2kg? Can't be more than a jumper or two

Good advice
We always wear our heaviest shoes and take our thick coat on the plane - saves on the weight. Take shoes off in the plane and put coat in the overhead compartment.

[SA let me fly with 2kg over, however I did put 10 kgs in my hand luggage. What about each of you adding something small and heavy to your hand luggage.All the best.
