Qantas or Etihad?

I've just done a trip home from Oz to Dublin with Etihad. They are code sharing with Virgin so my top tip would be to make sure that you fly from Abu Dhabi to Sydney on a Virgin flight (they were fab). The Etihad bit AD to Dublin wasn't great - very limited space so it was real sardines, individual screens were a big dodgy and because the flight was packed it wasn't possible to move, service was ok, not great, but Dublin to AD the flight wasn't very full so it was ok, service a bit better (food really nice) but basically it was ok because there was nobody in front to put their seat back and crush the hell out of my legs. On the other hand I would never, every, under any circumstances fly with Qantas (more bad experiences than I can list) so between the two I would go Etihad.

I also fly out of (/ in to) Dublin. The Thales entertainment units are pretty ordinary in terms of reliability. The noise-cancelling headphones on the other hand are a god send. You take them off and suddenly realise that there are crying babies etc. around you. Overall Etihad food and service is not quite on par with Singapore, but for a young airline they're doing pretty OK.

What a ridiculous statement (shock!).
I assume the incident you are referring to is the one that happened at the Airbus facility in Toulouse BEFORE the plane was delivered to Etihad and was undergoing testing by contractors?

Etihad from UK to Abu Dhabi, then get one of their code share flights with V Australia to Sydney.
V Australia Boeing 777 has only nine seats across in economy, whereas Emirates, Etihad themselves and others have 10...so the V Australia seats are much wider.

Etihad's 777s are all 9 across. Almost everyone you would fly with on that route is except Emirates...and surprised to see Air NZ have started it as well.

Just realised Etihad is only a one stopper (from Dublin that is pretty impressive) - so no contest really - Etihad it is

ABU DHABI INTL−MELBOURNE

Avoid QANTAS wherever possible. I haven't flown Etihad so can't comment but it would have to be very poor to get down to the level that QANTAS has been at for the past few years.

I'll stand corrected on Etihad...Emirtaes B777 Dubai - Aus is awfully small, especially as it usually goes via Bangkok, so it makes the sit in the small seats even longer. Not good for a big bloke like me and not worth the $150 or so less this route takes rather than the A380 direct.

Just been reading through this thread as we are booking a holiday to Australia in the near future. Looking at this it seems that Singapore Airlines is a winner and they fly from Frankfurt (we are currently in Germany). My husband is quite tall (about 6 foot 3) so obviously space is important for comfort would Singapore Airlines still be the best route?
I've flown Qantas to Australia in the past was quite a few years ago but I swore then that I would never fly with them before. The best company I've ever flown with was Virgin to America but they don't fly from Frankfurt to Australia it seems and it's a lot more money for us to travel to the UK first especially with 3 children.
