Thanks for all your replies. Really helpful :)

I'm now thinking buy in Oz. Have since done a search on household appliances & there didn't seem to be that much price difference.
Very good point from spottydog, I hadn't thought of the extended warranty, which I'd definately need (our washer is used daily!)

Luma, about the import duties, I wasn't aware of this, how do they know if your items are under 1yr?

Assuming it is the same as with the US, you are supposed to declare it on your customs form

I think it's a lot like here. If you shop around you will get good deals on almost everything.

Plus if you buy a few things at once, you could haggle a bit, especially if you are paying in $$$. ;)

The other practical thing to consider when buying a top loading washing machine is that you will not be able to put anythng on top of it. For example, you will not be able to 'slot' it below a kitchen worktop or whatever.

Just a thought...

Something else to think about! When I was up at the London Expo recently I got talking to a rep from one of the shipping companies. He told me if you purchased a brand new dyson (for example) within 6 months of your leaving date, you would be entitled to the VAT back. You just ask the retailer for a form and sent it of. This rep told me you would make sure you remove all packaging and they would obviously pack it. Down to you to declare it or customs to prove it was brand new!! ;)
Chance you take!!

Also extended warrenties are valid over here from some places, our telly was still under warrenty and we had it repaired here. Our Curries warrently covered it although we had to pay first and then get a refund.
