Default Public Transportation

I am planning to move to Melbourne and won't be getting a car. How inconvenient is it to go around by public transit? I will be working in the WTC area (I believe that's downtown?), but I will want to visit other areas during my time off.

Looks like the Metlink is pretty convenient, but having never been to Melbourne before I'd like to know if it is as good as it sounds.

Many thanks.

If you live near a train line you'll do ok. Only problem is whole place is so vast a car is a bit essential
