A pub with no beer

A pub with no beer
No proper beer that is
This is the most depressing aspect of all for me.
I knew Australian pubs and beer were pretty awful but had forgotten how bad.
I went to a couple of decent pubs in Adelaide but apart from that found very little of inspiration.
Most pubs outside of towns are little more than post work meetimg places for men.
They are also expensive!
In fact we found all Alcohol expensive. To buy something like Coopers or squires in a pub would be at least 6 dollars and that is for a schooner (375ml I think).
The bottle shops wwere cheaper but still more than the UK. Even wine seemed to be more expensive. Very little under$15 a bottle worth drinking.
I could not bring myself to drink Tooheys and the like:scared:
Coopers is OK and I liked the stout but mainly drank Pale or sparkiling.
Sqires was OK in small doses and both the pilsner and Amber were OK. I am not sure how long I could tolerate it for.
Apart from the pubs there were the RSL clubs which varied a lot but , to be honest, were more like casinos than clubs. One,on the central coast had at least 1000 pokies and was filled with depressed looking, silent people pouring money into a machine
Don't know how I will cope with this.
May even have to go Teetotal:scared:
Help me out someone.

Whereabouts are you heading for Grayling, or aren't you sure yet? (I know you'll have said, but I've forgotten!).
Queensland bottle shops has some stuff called Tasman Bitter, thats not bad, closer to "real" beer than to lager, and fairly cheap; I think there are others around if you search. Sydney has some places allegedly where you can get Speckled Hen etc, but at a price!
Or you can brew your own - Dagboy would be the guy to ask, tried some of his and it was wicked stuff!

I only went to a few pubs and am sure there will be decent places around.It is just such a big Culture shock compared to my local which has a log fire, real wooden beams, several Real ales and a lot of good company and NO fruit machines, TAB, Pool table or Muzak (sob
)Maybe have to get used to BBQs

best real pubs I've found were in Tassie. There were some down there that really reminded me of the UK; log fires, homecooked food, chatty landlord, just like some of my favourite places in rural Sussex.
Unfortunately I'm stuck in Brisbane, where most pubs have the character of a school dining-hall (and I don't mean Hogwarts!!). If anyone knows of a REAL pub around here, let me know. Gilhooleys is the closest so far.......

I will buck the trend and say that I actually quite enjoy the beer. There is nowt better than a cold pint of lager on a hot summers day!!

I cannot believe no expats have gone to Australia and opened up English pubs. They seem to be in every other place in the World I've visited. There must be a site on the web that details British/Irish pubs in Aus.
I would love to do it myself but would drink the profits !!

There were plenty of what the locals call 'Paint on Paddy' pubs.
Irish themed pubs like we get over here but really no different to all the others.

I agree with darkless, I quite enjoy the beer. Even the good old VB isn't bad.
I'm not a real ale fan though, nothing worse than a pint of warm beer.
