Hopefully not. I'll be taking about £1,000 OR $2,000. If there's a minimum limit then im sure im under it!!

There is no limit to the amount of currency you can bring in or out of Australia. However, you must declare amounts of A$10,000 or more in Australian currency or foreign equivalent. If asked by Customs you must also fill in a Bearer Negotiable Instruments (BNI) form if you're carrying promissory notes, travellers cheques, personal cheques, money orders or postal orders.

You can come in with nothing - the question is more around how are you going to fund yourselves. That could be credit card or travellers cheques or family or friends picking you up.

There is no limit to what you can bring in. However for amounts over $A10k you are required too declare it and they have some forms too complete to verify its origin and reasons for it being brought in as cash rather than electronic means.

When we arrived we only had a couple hundred dollars in Canadian funds. So barely anything really. But we did have our bank cards & credit cards from Canada to use.

Not once were we asked to show how much money we have. Presumably because we came on a permanent visa and had the right to stay and work here.

Hi is that up to 10K$ each... I know the rate is crap at the mo but we need to bring enough in to buy a car and down payment on a rental. OH has a job lined up and we were thinking of bring in 8-10k sterling. Would this be enough and also is this OK (family of 5).

cheers,

Shelley

Yes, each person must declare anything over $10k. That doesn't mean you can't bring more, just that you have to declare it
