I waited until i had the visa stamp in my passport - the way i looked at it was until we actually had the visa we might not be going so why put the family through the heart ache until it is 100%. Different strokes for different folks though. Good luck, either way it is a crappy thing to say !

We've had our visas since last September. Still haven't told family. Will be telling them when we see them at Easter. That still gives them about 15 months to get used to the idea.

Same as wargod. waiting for official confirmation of visa before mentioning anything. I know it will devastate my mom and dad. Why put them through it when it may not happen? Looks like it's going to though. Assurance of support sorted. Just waiting on DIMIA.

We did too. It wasn't the easiest thing we've ever done but it gave them the longest time to get used to the idea - almost 18 months as it turned out.

Hi

We've got the same problem, we told her Mum and sister after I had received TRA approval April 05, the response was less than complimentary, since then my missus has been panicking when to tell them were we are up to. We received our PR visa approval 3 weeks ago, the missus went to tell her mum and sister together but couldn't manage it, got herself in a right state and had 4 days off work through stress!!!!!

Think it will left to yours truly to break the news.....

In the same boat

Same here. I chickened out completely because I couldn't face breaking the news to my parents even during the visa process, so hubby ended up doing it. I felt like a right s**t being unable to face them and leaving it to him. Unfortunately they were less than happy and won't mention the 'A' word if they can at all help it. Our two boys are their only grandchildren which doesn't help, and they've already said they won't visit. Great.

I told my family as soon as we decided to do it.

Met with a variety of comments from 'You can't go that far, you will never do it' to 'Oh its just a flash in the pan idea'

They now know that things are really happening and I have kept them informed of every little stage.

I never thought my Dad would get use to it, Im not saying he has totally but he knows we are going.

I believe in my situation, that by informing them of everything and saying that its not cut and dry until the visa has been issued, they have had time to adapt.

They are talking of booking an apartment and spending Xmas 2007 with us, which would be great.

Some families are different and telling them at the last minute is the only way forward.

I just found that doing it from the start was the best way - for us.

If its any consolation we are undecided how to tell our parents too, dh and I have only just actually made the decision so you are not alone.

My parents will have a FIT!! My mum in particular as she is very controlling, they have to the right to be consulted apparently

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Good luck Milliesmum.

Although my Dad accepts we are going it will tear me apart when we say goodbye.

I think I underestimated how hard it can be leaving/telling family.

Oh well, it means loads to me they are planning to fly out (all of them) to see me though.

Hi, yes we are in a similar boat but are hoping to sort something out next weekend when we meet up (have posted in an earlier thread)

Best of luck to you whatever you decide to do and however you decide to do it! I shall look forward to hearing some good results

Don;t pay too much attention to the "we wont visit" comments, we had all those too. My parents guessed we were applying after we came here on holiday so we didnt have to tell them mu dad just asked "how did the rekkie go" but they both refused to talk about it even the last time we saw them they didnt really mention it, but as soon as we were here and spoke to them on the phone it was fine, just as if we were still there, infact i think thats how they think of it, that we are still there. They have visited and will be here again this year, they are both in their 80s.

good luck

Lynn
