There are certainly security issues around that hospital. The train station can be dodgy at night as well.

And here's hoping your wife has a quick recovery to such a traumatic event, Renth.
The area around the train station and hospital is a nightmare with Aboriginals and unless you are familiar with that area you shouldn't really start showing the race card.

Depends where you live though - since I have lived in my suburb in over 3 years, Homes West have bought 4 properties and have Indigenous families in all of them. ALL of the them have caused problems, trying to get into my property, luckily my dog threw himself at the fence and knocked someone clean off.

My neighbour opposite is now under police protection after having a drugged up guy and his mate from a newly built, newly smashed up house, knock on his door and demand $2000, when the old boy who is in his 70's and partially disabled said no, he pulled a bloody knife on him and threatened to kill him. The old boy called the cops, the cops came round - went to the house that they knew the guy lived in as the old boy got a description.

The guy wasnt there, 1 hour later the guy turned up with one of the Elders in a car, parked on his driveway and then tried to kick his door down.

Cops came out again and this poor old man is now under protection as they have confirmed the people concerned are known to the cops and dangerous.

That is four families now living in our suburb, not keeping themselves to themselves, not abiding by the law and not letting those of us that do CHOOSE to abide by the law, live our lives in peace.

In my mind when you get 4 out of 4 behaving like animals - it doesnt read very well does it? And what is the betting if Homes West buy up more houses that their occupants will not be model citizens either.

I don't blame Renth at all, he wants what is best for his wife and is ensuring she gets it, he has his own reasons and experiences personal to him and he has every right to do as he sees fit.

Renth - we are with HCF because we couldnt afford the others and HCF hospital cover is actually cheaper than Medibank top extras without hospital cover. I know it is based in the Eastern States but I am hoping it gives us some reasonable care if we ever needed it.

How is your wife now Renth, is she doing OK?

Remind me to cross your suburb off our list if we ever come back to Australia

Everybody who has wished me and my wife well here and via PM, thank you so much. It means a lot to know you care.

I don't know if any of you have heard the term "Cognitive Dissonance" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance

"Cognitive dissonance is a discomfort caused by holding conflicting cognitions (e.g., ideas, beliefs, values, emotional reactions) simultaneously. In a state of dissonance, people may feel surprise, dread, guilt, anger, or embarrassment."

It's how I feel, as a long time anti-racist when I decide I want nothing to do with aboriginal Australians. I'm sure some of them are OK, I've just never met one. I even think Ernie Dingo is a total dick.

I AGREE! although I would have said it sounds like the stories my daughter tells about Medway hospital in Kent (if you swap Aboriginals for Chavs).

As a breast cancer survivor, I wish your wife a speedy recovery and hope you are able to stay strong for her.

We've had 2 aboriginal workers who are great workers and people. One of them was 18 at the time and many wouldn't give him a go. He was one of the hardest working most reliable people I have met. At first he wouldnt even stop for smoko

My hairdresser is also aboriginal, very very talented young lady, who someone took on as a trainee when she was 15. She comes from a family where there is trouble, but that chance ( traineeship) set her up.

There are good ones, but sometimes its very hard for them to get a step up in life to prove themselves.

I would not hesitate to go in as a patient on the public system in the hospital i work at, it has a fantastic reputation, i count us lucky in Melbourne with the choice of hosps.

Ditto.

In my experience there's no such thing as free healthcare anyway - I had a minor procedure at St Vincent's in Sydney and they've been sending me begging letters ever since

Royal Prince Alfred on Sydney city fringes, you certainly don't want a trip to A&E there. I walked out after several hours of waiting to see a doctor as the other patients were so scary - some brought in by police were sleeping it off on the floor, others were threatening to smash up the place because they couldn't smoke, and one threatened to kill himself if they wouldn't let him go home. Oh and one wouldn't go home despite being discharged hours earlier, she wanted more drugs.

I haven't had experience of RBH but definitely agree with Logan, I wouldn't go there after dark.

As a totally unrelated aside my UK experience is badly broken leg operated on in public hospital by apparently the best orthopedic surgeon in the area and he saved my foot.
So, as usual, you are saying that Australia is shit and that the UK is great.

You will probably try and deny it but that's what it is.
