It is an interesting test, I volunteered on it while they were developing it, and failed

No theory test required
If you are the holder of a licence from a 'recognised country', you are not required to sit the road rules theory test or the motorcycle theory test (if applicable). However, you are still required to sit the heavy vehicles theory test if you are applying for the equivalent WA classes

VIC
No theory test required
If you are an existing licence holder from a recognised country, no tests are required to apply for a car or a motorcycle licence in Victoria

NSW
No theory test required
As from 17 January 2005 customers are exempt the car driver knowledge test if they hold an acceptable car licence from the UK or one of the other recognised countries.

Re: preparation materials for driving licence
Read up please as there are quite few differences in the theory from oz and uk, as i sat it blind(no clue or study) in jan, and failed by four, and then bought the theory book an studied it like a b)std as i had 2 days to pass before i left brissie and still had to fit in an otomestrists report, and passed it the second time.
Basically i failed on silly questions that youy really shpould know if entering the country as it can lose you your licence.
1. ALWAYS give way to the right, comes up in every theory test with diagrams, thatr is THE rule at any junction, follow that and use common sense.
2. Alcohol levels for new drivers and people of certain ages changes depending on how old you are. under a certain age alchohol reading has to be 0, no excuses.
3. if in melboune, a stupid rule to turn right as you have to go to the left of the road hen cut across traffic, i think this is due to the trams lines are in centre of road.
BEWARE. i picked out many things that were similar to u k, but quite a few that were different, ala, speed limit (national, is 100kmh in queensland and 110 every other state.
In queensland you can buy a road rules book for about £3 and study it a day before.
i just wrote notes on the ones i didnt know and the missus tested me, and the whole qld transport office is great, so much better than DVLA as you get your licence over the counter and can ask advice o any problems face to face. I found them great with me.
TRY www.ebay.com.au, and you may get a road rules book and can be sent to your home. just a thought.
