Port Douglas - hoilday tips?
#1
So, have booked a cheapie break for 1st week August. Plan to spend most of the time lolling round the pool but would like to venture out on one or 2 day trips too - anyone got any must see's/do's? Nothing too strenuous!
Thanks guys,

We went to Kuranda, caught the train from Freshwater I think it was and then came back down on the cable car.

I agree the Kuranda trip is a good day out. If you have a car you could drive up to the Atherton Tablelands, or north up to the Daintree. If you want something more local, the Lady Douglas river cruise is pretty good for a relaxing trip and goes from Port Douglas marina. Also, go and see George the Groper at feeding tiime (!)

Recommend a trip to the Low Isles, I have been on this trip and have recommended to friends and they loved it also.....

Great for kids, lovely beach, safe water, marine biologist to explain stuff, scuba diving (book to avoid disappointed)
Return Wavedancer cruise from Port Douglas
Morning and afternoon teas on board
Reef presentation by marine biologist
Tropical smorgasbord lunch
All snorkelling equipment provided
Qualified snorkelling safety officers on hand
Glass bottom boat coral viewing
Marine Biologist guided beach walk
Guided snorkelling tour with a Marine Biologist
It's not as long trip as the ones that go all the way to the outer reef. I had a friend that got all the way out to the floating pontoon and the water was rough, meaning visibility was poor = nothing to do and the waste of a day.
With the low isles, one partner can dive while the other watches the kids on the beach of snorkels from the beach, then swap over in the afternoon.
The trip leaves from Port Douglas (pick up in Cairns first)

I'm not sure that Port Douglas is ready for what is coming this July!

I agree with others - the Kuranda railway and then home over the treetops on the cable car and a day out on the reef. Make sure you get s decent boat out to the reef though - someone mentioned Quicksilver and we found them excellent. They go to the outer reef. Some of the smaller cheaper trips only go part way out and people say it's not as good.
Have a fabulous trip!

there are plenty of lovely beaches around. 4 mile was my fave.
a wee trip up to mossman gorge is nice
the port is nice at night. i had some ribs in an irish pub. food was nice.
theres a wildlife park not too far away too. we had a great day there when we first arrived in oz.
a trip on the daintree is lovely too.
if i were you i would just hire a car and get about the place
