(I know a lot of people live happily on the GC but the rest of Aus views them with some amusement - retirement villages, schoolies week and tourists!)

I don't think people on the GC give a stuff what the rest of Australia thinks about them. They know there's so much more to it than Surfer's Paradise, mobility scooters, sex, sun and sand :D

You cant argue with the great places in that area but I do agree with you it was part of the problem I returned as it wasnt entirely right for me. To busy and too many tourists

You were in the wrong part perhaps?

I hope it gets shown over here too.

Frank's story looks the most interesting and I like his attitude “You can be anything you want to be here if you put in the effort.”

The way most people stereotype Canberra despite barely knowing a small bit of it I'm sure you would have the wisdom not to be one of those people ;)

These shows are basically porn. I watched an episode of Phil Down Under last week...it was just as bad as all the others. Full of stock marketing video clips of Melbourne, dodgy exchange rate comparisons and tales of 'I get paid 8 times as much here as a Koala handler and I only have to work 6 hours a week'. Even my Aussie OH was sitting watching going 'eh?'.

Definately worth watching 'Phil Down Under' if only to gaze at Phil :o

Just watched it on itv-player. I thought it was good - it shows poms who are living and working on the GC rather than showing houses to potential migrants. It means we get to see a bit more than just the inside of houses.

Two of the people shown were very passionate about what they do: Frank who "weeds the rainforest" and Stuart who is a teacher and champion lifesaver. They were good to watch.

Next week features a meter maid in a bikini - you wouldn't want to try that in Scunthorpe

 Do they get paid more than nurses? ;)

We've been wondering what T could do for a living when we get out there - I'll get him to send off his resume, complete with photo. The hairy meter maid could prove very popular

This show, no. However I was describing 'Phil Down Under'.

Re: POMS IN PARADISE

I usually avoid these relocation programmes because, well we all know they're pants don't we? Laughable, misleading, the reason a lot of expats want to "live the dream" and are then sorely disappointed with the reality. (And the reason my mother thought we were going to get a 5 bedroom house with a pool, on an acre, in the middle of Sydney, with change from a fiver.)

I do watch Phil Down Under, mainly because I love Phil  and love property porn, but I can't stand the constant tourist adverts for <whichever city he's in> and I think his show is just as dangerous, TBH.

garyp, are you sure it's not just that the grass is always greener? There are reasons you returned to the UK; would they go away if you came back?

(I've never been to the Gold Coast and I ain't getting into that discussion!)
