OK, just a quick reply for now as I'm back to work this morning after Xmas & New Year.
Got to leave in about 10 mins, (an hours drive to one of our pools)....Anyway, at the risk of annoying Fraser, (again)
if you are Scottish, you can get a plumbing licence right away by just taking your qualifications / references etc to the office. If you are English, you have to go on a course and take practical and theory exams.
I could get a lot of mileage with the Scotland / England thing on this post, but haven't got time.

Will post more later...
Cheers... John....

Thanks Scossie
that was just what we wanted to hear! We have just had a bit of mileage on the scottish/english thing with this now but not up to posting it on here in case of causing offence! My OH is now smiling that he won't have to stay home with the kids all day, nothing like the Christmas holidays to get us all giving up dreams of staying at home eh?!

Hi Scossie
Just returned from a reccie trip to Mandurah area (not decided where to live yet !). I'm a time-served plumber (17 yrs) and I've been having trouble findin out info about getting plumbers licence (drivin me mad !!!
).
Was interested in your email that if you're scottish you can get a licence just by takin your qualifications/references to the office. Can you tell me more about this - what office & what kind of/how many refs (bet its loads !).
My Qualifications are - YTS:1988, ScotVec Stage 1, 2 & 3: 1987,88,89
City & Guilds Craft: 1987/88
Would really appreciate your help on this, gonna be moving prob end of year maybe into next year.
Cheers

Hi Mark
I believe from our investigations that because SNIPEF are part of the world federation of plumbers your qualifications are recognised and accepted much more readily than if you are English because the english licensing is not part of this world federation. That considered we are spending a bit of time getting Iain licensed at this end to make life easier when we arrive in Oz.
Plumbers licensing has a web site, quite good, just do a google search as I can't remember the address.

for all those who have come accross the same problems as us, i have found the website which appears to be the application form for tradespersons license from the plumbers licensing board in western australia, the ball can start to roll from the uk so i would urge all those who cannot afford a lot of time off to look at it as it is as in depth as the trade assessments which we undertook [email protected]

Hi Karen
Thanks for the info, do you mean that you are getting Iain to become SNIPEF registered at this end or that you are getting a grading card (not sure if they do them) from them for him ?
Mark is trying to find out about it all today so maybe know more about it tonight, definitely be better to get things done while we're still here (one less stress when we move eh
)

Hi Wendy
We are getting Iain a grading card, for which he had to do a health and safety test and then send the result off with his qualification details, photos etc. We may still think about snipef registration if any problems but don't think we will unless we have to. The people at snipef were really helpful when we phoned them and sent us all the stuff about grading cards that we needed. Where are you guys? and when are you thinking about going?

SNIPEF are a plumbing employers federation.
What they are after is a SNIJIB grade card, (nothing to do with SNIPEF).
The SNIJIB card proves you are a qualified, graded Plumber. Show them that, & you'll get your license.
BTW, CORGI registration means absolutely nothing in Australia, so any potential migrants thinking about shelling out to do the CORGI course for some extra Brownie points..... Don't!
It'll be a complete waste of money.

My Scottish JIB card worked for me to get my license, & it's been the same for other Scottish Plumbers I know.
All I can say is that I've met a few English Plumbers in the 3 years I've been here, & they all said they had to do the course and the exam before they got theirs.
