Default Plumbing help needed

The pilot light has gone out in our heater and I know how to start it up again, but all the buttons seem 'stuck' and I can't push them in.

Does anyone know if this some kind of safety valve feature etc?

Any help appreciated.

safety thing should only lock it out for about 30 seconds after each attempt.
its not a turn n push type is it? spring loaded?
