The incentive is that working generally allows you more opportunities, with a higher income, that just benefits.

You working?. If you are, just give it up and let the State provide for you. Then come back and tell us all what a great life you have living on State benefits.

Well said.... the unemployment benefits are so low - guess they might [and rightly so] just about put food on your table and a roof over your head.

You can't really "live" on benefits indefinitely. And if people are living it up whilst claiming dole then it appears they must be cheating the system (that is clearly fraud)

TheotherPhil - are you saying you never claim FTA, FTB, Childcare benefits even if you're entitled to them? Wow

VIC and the Australian Gov for that matter, will supply you with pretty much nothing. You are granted a visa on the basis that you will be a cost benefit to the Australian economy, not a drain. If you can't make it on your own then ideally I think the Australian government and people as well, would prefer you left.

South Australia is the only State that offers that facility.

Your friend was very lucky indeed. When we applied we were told that thousands of people apply for it but only a very few actually are granted OAA. Besides, the accommodations are nothing to write home about! The house we had was very old, very basic and in a not-so-good area of the city.

It is real, as long as they have empty housing commission properties available at the time.

It is only available to skilled migrants, and it is NOT free.

Rental costs depend upon the location, size and age of the property, but generally range between $140 and $300 per week (subject to change). Rent includes the cost of water, electricity and gas.
They give no guarantees, and I have heard of some people that have been told, 7 days before they arrived, that they have none spare, and then need to find a hotel quickly.
The number of properties available for this program is limited and Housing SA is unable to guarantee that accommodation will be available for your arrival. With this in mind it is recommended that you also book private accommodation as a back-up to this service.
