Places to live around Melbourne
Dear all,
we are looking for suggestions for good places to rent around the Melbourne area.
We are a 30 year old childless couple and whilst we don't need the bright lights of the city we would like a smaller place where there is still some interesting things happening. The coast would be great but of course rental prices seem to be very high. We have heard that Ringwood East or Highett would be good options.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks.

like yourselves, myself and my wife are in our 30's without any kids and also looking to rent in Melbourne later this year..
we visited melbourne in Feb, and really liked some of the suburbs like: Hampton, Brighton, St Kilda, Sandringham and Ellwood. They all have access to beaches very close by and a good community feel. Also, they are only 20/30 mins from the centre of Melbourne by train.
we were staying with relatives so these were the areas we passed through quite often and they will certainly be on our list when we start to look for rental properties.
happy hunting!

In my opinion, it depends on where your job is located. If around city, St Kilda is an option although likely to be a bit pricey.

I think you should list all the characteristics you need for a location which will help create a shortlist. That's what we did.
E.g.
Train connectivity - Y/N
Accessibility to city - Y/N
Proximity to beach - Y/N
Proximity to bush - Y/N
Proximity to city - Y/N
Old or new suburb - Y/N
Nightllife - Y/N
Good state schools -N
Good private schools - N

Elwood is a nice area used to live there myself. Highett is a long way from Ringwood.
Ringwood is out the other way entirely towards the Hills.
Caulfield is a good area to live as well, Glenhuntly Brighton East, Ormond,
Hawthorn, Camberwell, Malvern, Box Hill
Richmond is popular as is South Yarra also Southbank, St Kilda Road, Docklands
Kew, Ivanhoe
Ascotvale, Williamstown
