I have lived in Australia all my life and I have never paid to see a GP. Specialist yes, but not a GP.
I think the mistake that many British immigrants make is that they tend to go to small 'family' practices- this is a BIG no-no.
You must only ever go to a large medical centre that has like atleast 6 doctors. Mine has 17 and I never have a problem.

I am beginning to think we won't be able to afford to live in Australia! It'll be cheaper to have another baby and not worry about contraceptive!!

Keep all your pharmacy and doctors receipts, and any medical-related bills including gap payments. You will get 20% of it back through your tax return, on the amount over $1500 spent on prescriptions and other medical expenses each year. Last tax year our family forked out $4200. Subtract $1500, 20% refund = $540 - not to be sneezed at! :-))

Hey Suzy
I have a medicare card and recently went to get my first prescription - the medical centre bulk billed and I have a prescription with 3 repeats, so I have a total of 1 years supply. They give me 3 months at a time for Marvelon and it cost $35 for the 3 months. All-in-all not too bad.
