To those of you in Perth how are you finding it? Does it feel isolated? Is there enough going on on the west coast to keep you entertained? Is the weather great?

To those of you heading to the west coast what made you consider this over the east coast?

Perth is great beautiful beaches and it will keep you occupid for the first couple of years after that yes can be isolated.
Flights over East are expensive so unless coming over with loads of cash might not get over.
If you are a young couple with no kids you might find it quiet but for familys its great.

We call Perth "the Island" but it is a fun Island....sometimes

The weather is Good but again only sometimes :scared:

And yes it can feel isolated and very boring...sometimes

Well we are young ish! I am 27 and Ian is 33. I think we will be starting a family within the next 2-3 years so we are looking for a great place to raise a family. Sounds like Perth is great for that. Doe sit rain a lot? Is it ever as crap as the UK?

We had a great lifestyle in the Highlands of Scotland and to be honest it is different here but not necessarily better

No, not really, plus there are airlines offering cheap flights now to Melbourne (sugar, can't remember the name!). There's loads to do in Perth and once you make friends you will be pretty busy most weekends. As Mairi put in the Joondalup vs Rockingham thread there is so much to WA, Perth is just the tip of the iceberg. Once you stop rushing about in UK mode, you can unwind and enjoy all this fab state has to offer.

No, Perth is not isolated. Everything you need is here & there is plenty to do. We had a look at SE Qld & thought it was a craphole. Perth & WA is the best part of Australia. We have the strongest economy, lowest unemployment & (I think) cheapest houses in Australia. There is an article in today's Sunday Times about dishwashers in the Pilbara (mines) earning $100k/year. Perth is not the most exciting city in the world & I guess it is more geared up to families. But if I was single I wouldn't mind living here. There are a lot of good looking, single women here & plenty of nightlife, sure we don't have the latest cutting edge bars & clubs but what we do have is pretty good. I look at WA as a separate country, different from the rest of Australia. It's 5 hours to Sydney or 5 hours to Singapore. Same difference to me.

Great - wouldn't choose the east coast over west any time. Prefer the much more laid-back lifestyle and attitude here - much less intense than east coast. I think the climate is better - drier, less humid - and I think the people are nicer too. More friendly, more time for you.

I don't know about entertainment - we are a family that is happy doing *family things* in and around the home and we've never been big on having to *go places* or *do things* to have a good time. But there are theatres and clubs in Perth, and they do get contemporary acts. It depends on what it takes to make you happy. For us, life is what you make it.

Oh, and btw, dh's job offer was better here. A good $10k more than he would have got in Sydney. This was a big factor in our deliberations.

Considering all that's going on in the world, I'm glad it's comparatively isolated.

I know about my children stating now (15 and 13) about wanting to leave Aus at 18 for education and jobs) and I live in Sydney. I know I have no argument to make them stay as we left family behind to come here and I do believe in our actions and I will support any choice they make.

Surely moving to Perth because with a population of 4 mil in WA... there is limited opportunity for the future....especially given a british/european passport! And please do not send my offspring down the mine Amazulu.

The populaton of WA is actually just under 2 million. WA's resource based economy is powering Australia at the moment & will probably do so for a while. The opportunities here are enormous, sure, if they want to be high flying investment bankers then WA is not for them & they are better off n London. If they want to be engineers, nurses, teachers, accountants ie 'normal jobs' then no problem with a bright future. The colour of your passport has got nothing to do with your job prospects.

OK I got the population wrong ....just over 2 million in 2005...which makes it worse in my mind. I grew up in Northern Ireland with 1.5 million and a huge brain drain. And of course the passport makes a difference. Given that a heck of a lot of aussies use the ancestory visa, having a passport out means alot and London is not the be n end all. British passport means European. And regardless of where in Aus the wealth may be buried...perception is a bigger thing and that does not make Perth a happening capital!

I'm not sure where i sit with that statement??
I grew up in Perth with the great outdoor and family orientated lifestyle and after returning to the UK when i was 12 i'm now returning home to Perth!!
I am fortunate enough to have both a European & Aussie passport but if perception is so important then where will i fall with a broad Northern UK accent??

Will that mean that i won't be able to achieve the same if not better level of employment in Oz? I currently work in Publishing. I hope to continue to pursue a similar career over there however i'm well aware that i may have to compromise but doesn't a certain level of determination count towards career goals no matter what the career, country or accent??

It doesn't make any difference to me whether it is perceived as a 'happening' capital or not. I like Perth for the place it is, and not because it has been labelled as the next big thing...

It's the more relaxed lifestyle, warmer weather, and less stressful life I am going to Perth for.

The fact that it may be isolated from other places, does not bother me in the slightest. It makes it even better, as when I fancy going somewhere else for a break or holiday it will be more worthwhile, as it will feel like I've actually gone somewhere.
