There are a thousand threads on this one and a good one going at the moment. I, like everyone else am biased and it very much depends on what your likes and dislikes are and the amount of $ you have available.
We are a couple in early 40's with no kids and a small dog. I used to work in Perth and have to say i would rather move back to the UK than live there. We much prefer where we are in Dawesville which is near Mandurah and would say check out the areas around there.

Theres lots of great suburbs all over perth so its tricky to outline them all really. It comes down to what you can afford and what you want close. Basiclly how far from the city do you want to be. I have lived all over perth and never had any troubles in any suburb, with the houses being quiet large and indervidual I find people keep to themselves mostly, so I havent had any trouble with noisey neghbours like I had in the UK.
Also because the suburbs are so spread out, people tend to drive most places so you dont see many people on the streets, so you dont get gangs of teenagers hanging round parks or shops like you used to in the UK. Here I can go for a walk, at night, and never feel threatened or in danger, in most suburbs you will barely see anyone walking so its nice and quiet.
The further from the city you go, the cheaper and bigger houses get. I used to live about 45mins out but lived a short walk from a train station so it was easy to get in when needed. The house was big and cheaper than where I am now which is about 15minutes away from the city.
So it just comes down to how close to the city you want to be really
