We have just eaten at Kulcha in Joondalup, yack!!

Actually we went 2 weeks ago and it was fantastic, this week bloody awful.

It was too busy, waiters didn't know what they were doing so everything seemed a mess. But it has a great reputation.

If its a top meal or treat you are after then you will struggle to beat the main restaurant at the Burswood, superb food especially seafood and sweets, you can literally eat as much as you like, reasonably priced too.

C Restaurant in Perth is goodish, however very expensive, you are basically paying for the view as it is at the top of a skyscraper (33rd floor if I remember correctly) Best idea there is go for a drink instead, you still get the view but dont get the food then eat at somewhere like 9Marys instead or the Japanese right opposite 9 Marys which is always completely full every night of the week.

If its an indian you are after then you will be hard pushed to beat the Royal India in West Perth http://www.royalindia.com.au/index.htm they have won the restaurant of the year something like 7 or 8 times, probably been there 20+ times and never had anything but a superb meal.

Trigg is nice, if a little inconsistent, The Azura Cafe in Floreat is nice too, nothing fancy just good food. As previously mentioned Mullaloo Beach is really nice, gets busy at times though. The Indianna Tea Rooms in Cottesloe are really good also and the view is superb. Wild Fig cafe on the coast road near Sorrento is also nice.........a few to go at there. If I was going out tonight and had to pick one I would go to the Royal India in a heartbeat. :)

If its a takeaway especially chinese then the Rice Inn in Hillarys is superb, very cheap ridiculously clean and tidy, and the food is always superb, even though its a fair drive we go there once a week, you can also eat in too as they have a small alfresco area outside which is really nice.

What I was after were any ideas of that special occasion restaurant, or a place that does something really fantastic.

I have one thing to recommend - Trigg Beach Cafe does one of the best Lemon Merrangue Pies around, even if it is $10 a pop.

Mmmm Where shall we start?!
We like Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle-esp the Rogers beer,hand-cut frites with mayo & one of their wood-fired Pizzas
Also Witches Cauldron,Rokeby Rd ,Subiaco-delicious Garlic Prawns
All time favourite-Fratelli Restaurant at Sorrento-lamb shanks gorgeous! nice red wines AND a seaview
Wild Fig ,Watermans Bay for a Beet-booster juice with Tabasco & Lime(nice after a swim in sea opposite) flat bread & 3 dips are very tasty & homemade

Fish & Chips? hard one this, all chips rubbish, not a patch on Uk ones.but fish fresh& excellent at Peters -by-the Sea in Scarborough & Amber-Jacks in Cottesloe(get a bottle of Seawiew sparkly & watch the sunset under the Norfolk Pines) Friends swear by Bills Fish & Chips at Duncraig.

VIEWS ; We like Blue Duck @ Cottesloe,Zamia Cafe @ Kings Park-nice peaceful outlook, lovely orange polenta cake. C-Restaurant(Perths revolving skyline restaurant, for full panorama .On top of AAPT tower-a must do for visitors)
Oyster Bar on the Foreshore,South Perth.

Chinese; We like Dim Sum at Jade Garden,Northbridge.
Indian; Thali platter at Maya Masala,Northbridge.Good old "Govenders" curry combo at Joondalup(like sitting in someones back lounge-BYO,tasty
Annaslakshmi, upstairs by Swan Bells,Barrack Sq. indian vegetarian, again very tasty. The Cove at Applecross is excellent as well

Wineries; too many to mention.Had nice meals at Wise at Dunsborough,Amberleys,Woodynook,M. River ,and Darlington Estate & Millbrook Nr. Perth and good old Edgecombe Bros ,Swan Valley(lovely tea & produce)
Enjoy!!!

I haven't tried this but I have eaten at the TIC a few times. I think the dinners are grossly over-rated. Nice service but poor value and the dessert I had (cheescake) was bland and plasticky - very 'manufactured'. Other than the view I can't see why the place is so popular.

If you are in that area Bennion Street Cafe does nice lunches; we ate dinner at Jetty's in Hillary's and I thought the buffet was excellent value. Soba Cafe also does nice lunches. Wild Fig is nice but over-rated.

All my opinions of course.

(Bookings are always unannounced, anonymous and meals paid for.)

I agree about trigg island cafe, nice view but average food. I also like Bennion St and Soda Cafe and the Fig agree nice but over-rated. The cafe Spinnakers down near the dive club at Hillarys is also good. Voyage on the front at Sorrento is also a good place for lunch and breakfast. White Salt too isn't bad. Cor blimey you can tell I am a lady who lunches and breakfasts can't you!!

Disagree strongly about Jettys thought $120 for a buffet of overcooked stodge was not my idea of heaven but as you say opinions only.

Otyer favourites:

Indian: The Cove in Attadale - still not a patch ona good British Indian but not bad.
Chinese: Ocean Dragon in Waterman's (our local) but better ones are the one on teh corner in Applecross (on Canning Highway) - does great Dim sum. There's another in Northbridge on the street running alongside the railway line - great DS on a Sunday lunch.

Thai - haven't found a really good one yet.

Buffet's - Rendezvous in Scarborough does an OK one but not a patch on Jetty's in Hillary's

Other - Little Creatures in Freo is still a real favourite. Kailis Bros on the harbour in Freo is also good. Sparrow is great for cheap Indonesian (William Street Northbridge - there's also a newish Indian next door - anyhone tried this?)

Excellent Japanese cafe - Taka - Shaftó's Lane (or something similar) opposite the Irish pub off Murray/Hay St in CBD. (Superb value - packed with Japanese!)

If you're ever in North Beach - Pasta on the Terrace on Flora Terrace does great value pasta - $12-14 for a whopping serve - try the marinara.

I'm always after good resturant recommendations - especially in the Northern Subs where I think there is a bit of a lack of good quality places.

The Thai at Marmion shops is excellent, best I have found. Sheppard Way is the address, long name I can't remember. I love the Japanese place opposite Durty Nellies in town, yummo food.

$40 a head - bearing in mind that I must have eaten 3 dozen oysters before I started on the mains I thought that this was good value. I like it because there's always something that I can feed the kids with.

The beef and hams were good - some of the veg did look a bit faded but they were topped up regularly.

That's the Japanese I was referring to.

The Marmion Thai is OK - but not as fresh tasting as good Thai should be - I think a bit too Chinesey and not enough Thai(y)!

Thai(y) - excellent, is that to be admitted to the new BE dictionary.

We have tried a lot of Thai restaurants too and Marmion has come out on top for us but agree its steering more towards a chinese flavour, the one in my own suburb of Connolly being my least favourite.

$40 a head at Jettys I guess is good value for what you are able to eat but the night we went may have been a bad evening.

Have to agree with you NB...Jettys is truly poor slop.

Utter garbage!

Re: Perth - something to eat

For a decent Thai, try the Dusit in Northbridge (right down the opposite end from the Brass Monkey) or the Sala Thai in Freo.

Chinese - we struggle to find a good one but for the food the one in Cottesloe near the Boat Shed upstairs is pretty tasty, not the cheapest and a slightly odd location... (might be the Jade Court)
The Grand Palace on the corner of Barrack Street in the park is also pretty good but again not cheap.

Red Herring in East Freo is worth a visit.
as is Swan Brewery
A few of the Italiens in Osborne Park around where Hutton meets Main St are ok and quite good value (there in the Entertainment book )

For Pizza - the best two are Ecco in Subiaco and Sandrino in Freo.

Atlantic in Subiaco is also good.

Its pretty hard to have a bad meal in Perth, I think the standard of restaurants and the food they serve is in general pretty high.

The worst meals ive had have been at the Witches Cauldron - cant stand that place, it so over rates itself with the prawns and Garlic (like how hard is it to cook prawns and 2ton of garlic???) the place reminds me of an old Berni in the UK, twice ive been there and its been a rip off for what they serve, basically stodge on a plate in tired surroundings.

Re: Perth - something to eat

Agree with a lot of Steve's suggestions...

Sala Thai in Freo is the best Thai in my opinion
Nine Mary's in the City is a good (if expensive) Indian
Little Creatures is great place for a laid back atmosphere
Rialtos in Subi is a good modern Italian with a good atmosphere
Funtasticos in Subi is a good pizza / pasta place
Twisted Fork in Mosman Park is new and very popular, BYO
Clarkes in North Beach (not been but have heard it is very good)
Jackson's in Highgate has a very good reputation (again not been myself!)

Favourite breakfast haunts are:

Barista in Cottesloe - great coffee
Lemon in Claremont
John Street Cafe in Cottesloe, also does excellent lunchs!
Zephyrs on the river in Est Freo does great food and is a good place to take kids along to as there is a park right next to the cafe, also does lunch and dinner (weekend only), including no charge for BYO beer and wine.

Cheers

Paul
