OH has been offered a job in Perth with current company which is great news. Plan is to arrive 1st week in December, so need to start thinking about areas and schools. We have been reading the many threads on here about Perth suburbs but hoping someone might be able to help with advice about viewing and registering with schools. We think we will have about two weeks before the end of term to have a look around and get the kids in somewhere. Ages are 5 and 6.
Can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks

Hi Mands
First of all,
on OH being offered a job, We arrive in Perth 24th Nov which is a week before you, and i have been researching schools around the area. I have emailed a few schools, but they have all sent back an email to say they can't offer my son a place until we know where we are going to live and if it would be in the catchment area of the school. At the moment we only have temp accomodation sorted until we arrive over there and then we will find permanent accomodation. My intensions are, to firstly visit schools we would like to send our son before they break up for the summer holidays, then sort out accomodation around that.
Good Luck Mands,

Thanks starlite. Have you narrowed down any areas? We are looking just south of the river Bicton and surrounds and are also going to have a reccie round some areas NOR. Fremantle sounds lovely too. So hard to judge though before seeing no mattre how much you read! It feels like it will be a hectic first week! Is your son going to primary or secondary?

I will be working in Subiaco so we are looking for accomodation and schools NOR. To be honest i haven't really researched hardly anything SOR. My son is 12 years old so he will be going to secondary school. But yes, it is hard to judge where to go until you get there, but i'm sure it will keep us busy when we arrive!

Why ddon't you do a search on good schools and house price affordability? Follow this up with google street view search, shopping search etc.

Hey guys, we live in Butler, NOR, there are many very nice suburbs up this way, depends what you are looking for, ie close to the city or close to the beach, we wanted to be close to the beach, which is 5 mins by car, there is a lot of developing near where I am as they are extending further up North. You can find lots of older suburbs too, I just really like all the newness of where we are. If you know how far you want to be from the city/beach I can maybe help you NOR.
Just give me a shout if, happy to help.

bicton is a very nice area and well established + its v close to freo. you will need a permanant address if you are to register for a state school, you may find some schools in bicton are very sought after so to stand a chance of a place you will have to be in the catchment area for them.

Fremantle sounds lovely too.
Freo is lovely...however it is also very expensive!!!!
You really need some idea of budget as suburbs vary in price!

Thanks guys for the info. Ideally we only want to run one car and OH is working in East Perth near Claisebrook station. So if we were close enough he could cycle or he could take the train if we were living near a station so I could have the car most days. From what we have read on here, I think we have narrowed our focus around to NOR from City Beach upwards keeping left of the Mitchell freeway or SOR east of Freo between Palmyra to Mt Pleasant. We are probably looking to pay up to $450 per week rental and would need 3/4 bed place.
Does anyone know of a website that would give a summary of primary schools in Perth to get idea of size, locations etc?
Cathy, how easy is it to get into Perth from Butler and how long does it take?

Nearest Station is Clarkson approx 6km from Butler. Clarkson to Perth Underground is around 1/2 hour. I do this run everyday and its a piece of cake.
Driving in rush hour can be an hour plus but the Freeway extension to Burns Beach will knock off around 15 mins. Its a pain to get to the Freeway but when the extension opens (in the next couple of months) it will be much easier.

It's very easy to get from Butler to Perth both driving and by train. I drive from Clarkson (5 minutes south of Butler) to Claremont every day. Takes about 45 minutes down Marmion Avenue. Or you could take the train from Clarkson station directly to Perth. The train will be extended to Butler in the future, but that's still a few years away.
