Smile Permanent Residency through SIR Visa

Does anyone know whether it is true that in order to apply for and be granted permanent residency under the SIR visa (once you have completed the living and working requirements for the 3 years) that:

a) the job you have worked in for the required amount of time (in Australia) must be on the Skilled Occupations List

and

b) that you must meet the basic requirements, at the time of applying for permanent residency? (This would mean we would lose points for age having increased in age by 3 years when applying for permanent residency and therefore not have enough points).

Any information on this new Visa would be much appreciated - it is our last and only chance of trying to get permanent residency in Australia - and there seems to be a growing amount of information on this route which seems to have changed from when it was first introduced.

Hey Misty!

Can´t help with your question, but try posting it on the "immigration" section of the forum. I´m sure there will be someone who can help.

Good luck

To answer (a) the answer is that nobody *knows* because it will depend on what criteria are set by States for STNI sponsorship of SIR visa holders. We'll know about 2007 or so, in the meantime anyone going SIR is a guinea-pig.

The DIMIA requirements for SIR visa holders going for STNI are flexible (although complex) but they depend on the co-operation of the States in sponsoring. The risk of the State not playing ball will probably be lower in those states that have a migration track-record with individuals - Vic, SA and Tas.
