Pay for nursery care workers
Hi all,
I am considering doing a child care course in SA. I don't seem to be able to find any job ads which actually state what the pay is for child care work. It would be nice to know what sort of wages to expect after finishing the course.
Any info would be great.
Thanks

Hi Pumpkin Blossom
From what ive read over the last year or so - i think that nursery care workers are on a par with hairdressers over there - and from reading they are both poorly paid - from what i understand they have a lot of parent helpers in their schools so dont really require our skills.
I am a Nursery Nurse here in England and was hoping to get work over in Oz but my skills are not on the MODL list so i wish all the best.
Hope this hasnt been too big of a blow - we are looking at other ways to get in so dont give up hope.
All the best
Sam

Can't give you a figure but I know it's really bad, I think its' the lowest paid industry !

Re: Pay for nursery care workers
sorry it took me so long to see your request
my wife was in childcare here in Sydney, as a childcare assistant rather than what they classed as a teacher (she has a Dip. in Childcare Studies)
her take home pay was around $500 a week, i don't know how this compares to other areas though (it certainly isn't a great wage in Sydney)

G'day
Well it took me less than thirty seconds on Google to find the answer.
If you were searching for nursery then that was probably your problem. In most of Australia, a nursery worker is someone who works in a plant shop selling roses !!
However when I googled for Wages "Child care" "South Australia" it then took 2 clicks to find this wage sheet. As has been said by other posters, wages are not good, they start at $13.54/hr or $514.60/week before tax.
Cheers

On the plus side, I suppose the less you earn the less gets taken in taxes?

Just curious what your qualifications are,
Child Care Co-ordinator is on the MODL list but you need to have managerial experience to pass the TRA, if you hold a senior position you may qualify.

Re: Pay for nursery care workers
Hi there,
I don't actually have qualifications yet. I was talking to an agent the other night who told me that I could study child care in Australia, as a route into Australia. I only just looked at that last night saying you need a degree or 5 years experiance. I have asked if this is possible on the immigration website as this agency hasn't replied (not a good start).
Thanks again everyone
