Painting or Staining
an old deck which desperately needs a coat of something. It's on my list of things to do.
I'm concerned that if I use a paint, even with adequate prep that it will peel rapidly. I'm concerned if I use a stain, it won't cover the mismatch of grey and brown hues in places - it is pretty bad. I plan on using an oil based enamel.
What do people reckon?

If your deck is grey then you really do need to sand it back and then stain and seal.
There is a product out there that claims to get the colour back from grey but I have never tried it and just doesn't sound right to me.

Everyone is telling me not to paint, but Google searches tell me that solid stains can peel as bad as paint : although I question their products; also our deck will be covered; theres wasn't. I think I will get a good dark stain.

We used a really good oily/nuggety type of product that was put on with a cloth. Two or three coats of this makes the timber waterproof for up to 12 months, after which time you need to do it again. Go and see the guys at Bunnings or you local hardware shop - I am sure they will know this product.
