Default "credit references" What this mean?

I just noted this in the check list .

"Request credit references from your bank, building society or any other lending agent"

What this exactly mean. I am from Thailand and I do not think financial institutions or banks provide such a credit reference. Will this be an issue for following things..
1. when applying for a credit card in Australia?
2. taking a home mortgage loan in Australia?

Thanks

Firstly the list you reference is a list of suggestions from a british magazine - it is not official! The reason this is suggested is that some people take a letter or a recent bank statement with them to Australia to prove they have had credit before and are trustworthy. It isn't mandatory so stop panicking!!!!!
