Our no go zones
Read the following article in the Courier mail!
http://www.news.com.au/sundaymail/st...07-952,00.html
"Brisbane is the most dangerous city we have travelled in," one of the backpackers said. "Everyone at the backpackers was talking about how scary it is."
Rapes, muggings and stabbings have turned the City Botanic Gardens and Goodwill Bridge into danger zones.
I am trying to get away from this!

Few things to hopefully stop you being scared.
1) Every city in the world has some sort of violence by idiots on the street. Wherever there are people in the world, there will be crime.
2) This newspaper report noted comments by a few people, no officials and hardly any names quoted. It is all "he said, she said". Hardly credible evidence, typical newspaper scare tactics
3) The areas mentioned by the odd few people in the report are miles apart in Brisbane. Brisbane centre is approx a couple of hours away from Noosa and approx an hour away from Surfers Paradise. So three potential high crime areas in "Brisbane"...... are in fact miles away in reality.
Of course there are areas within Brisbane or the Gold Coast or the Sunshine coast where you wouldn't hang out in the dark. But isn't that true of ANY city in the world

Sounds like the british Government are trying their tricks again to stop us leaving the country! After all, they do need us to pay our taxes, can't have us leaving now, can they?

Re: Our no go zones
If you read the article you will notice it mentions places like outside the casino - after 3am! Or the Valley in one specific street with nightclubs. Or the park in Kemp St. Not exactly the sorts of places that your average everyday family person frequents. Or Surfers Paradise - between 4 & 5am! Townsville. Cairns. Noosa. Gympie!!! If you went to any town or city in the world & asked the locals or local police "Where is the most dangerous area in town" you would get at least one person telling you a specific area & you could write an article exactly like the one you just read. Of course things happen but there is nothing like some media hype to sensationalize a story.
Be aware of the places that are more likely to be problem spots & avoid them if you are worried, nothing hard about that .
If you are moving "to get away from this" then I'm not sure where in the world you are moving to. Sorry but if you think that anywhere in the world has no crime or nothing like this going on, you need a reality check.

Lets have a look at the election issues:
1. water (I see a sledge hammer coming into play)
2. health
3. Law & order (dusted down, again)
4. Electricity (maybe Powerpoint Pete thinks we have forgotten)
5. Roads?
6. ?

- the Pitcairns, which in itself has its own challenges , but very few violent crimes against the person
- The falklands has a good record statistically apart from a bit of a spike in the mid 80's.

Re: Our no go zones
sorry... I've done my fair share of backpacking around the world including Brisbane, and now I live in Brisbane.
Can honestly say I've never worried about walking around the streets of brisbane at any time of the day or night.
I have been to all the places mentioned in article (casino, the valley, botanic gardens area, the underpasses and down southbank at the goodwill bridge) and I've never had any bit of bother. Yeah there's people hanging about, but it's a city FFS - what do you expect?!?!?!
I'd also love to find out what backpackers these people are staying in, because of all the ones I've stayed in in brisbane the only dicussions where about where to go next, and where had the cheapest beer.
As phoenixinoz said there's no named sources in the article, just a taxi driver, a couple of 22yr old backpackers, a some police that are apparantly scared to enter the valley (there was plenty of them there last night, and none of them looked scared!).
In the city when it's lock-out time at the clubs there are PLENTY of police about, and if there's even a glimmer of a bit of bother the police are right in there nicking people and taking them away.
actually........ having lived slap bang in the centre of edinburgh for 6 years before coming here, I would rather wander about here at night that I would in edinburgh... us edinburgh punters are a scary bunch!!
