Question Re: IT opportunities

I'm heading over to Sydney in April (4yr 457 approved, flights booked and we're ready to go). I'm fortunate in that my wife is the one being sponsored by her current company to set up new offices in CBD - this means I can work for anyone.... problem is I don't know anyone and could really do with some expat IT people networking to assist in looking for a new position. I don't want to wait until I get there to start looking and prefer not to rely on the agencies. I'm a Service Delivery Manager with 10+ yrs experience, got a computing degree (but almost back when the babbage machine was still in use :-) so haven't pressed buttons for some time).
Any IT bods out there in Sydney who can give me contact names at decent companies or better still who recruiting?

I am not there yet but am hoping some of the local folks inputting to BE forums (and on IT in particular) volunteer their opinions. When I get there I would be happy to provide any reasonable support I can - we hope to be there later this summer if all things go to plan (paperwork/visa all sorted)

When do you get out there once your visas come through?
I expect we will be there around the same sort of timeframe (UK Summer), although it will depend on how the attempts to sell the house go!
We are heading to either Brisbane or Adelaide although the IT industry as a whole seems to be based in either Sydney or Melbourne.
Good luck with your move !

Additionally from an employers perspective, would they perceive my varied background as an advantage or disadvantage ie say if I applied for a Development or Project Manager role?

Having visited Oz before, we have knowingly decided to move to WA for the lifestyle, opportunities for kids etc - with this in mind, and knowledge of WA IT being a small market, I am not clear however on what all the options are going forward wrt to finding a suitable job eg take lower scale job & try and move up over the coming years, contracting for x months to get a better feel for the market & make contacts, etc.
One good point is that UK experience is valued. Of all of the more senior IT people I have come across every single one has spent at least a couple of years working in the UK and look favourably upon such experience.

As other posters have said, you may have to step down a notch or two until you get 'runs on the board' as it were, but after that it will get much easier.

Contracting would be the best way to start as you can get a feel for things without being too committed.
